Ambient Corporation is a publicly traded American company that provides smart grid technology and communications solutions to the utility industry. Founded in 1996, the company is headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts, and has a satellite office in Europe.

History

Ambient Corporation was founded in 1996 in Newton, Massachusetts. John J. Joyce joined the company in 2000 as Chief Operations Officer and became President and CEO in 2001. The company has since grown significantly, moving from over-the-counter trading to NASDAQ and reporting $62.31 million in revenue in 2011 – 27 times its 2009 revenue. The stock was added to the Russell 3000 Index on 25 June 2012. Ambient was a 2011 recipient of the Utilities Telecom Council Best Smart Grid Product Award. Ambient Corporation was ranked 54th on the Deloitte Fast 500 for North America 2012.

Technology

Ambient designs and develops hardware and software that creates a digital communication network to provide utilities with real-time insights into operations on the distribution grid while enabling the measurement, monitoring and management of multiple smart grid applications in parallel. Ambient’s smart grid platform is based on Internet Protocol (IP) technology. The communications platform consists of nodes and a network management system to optimize grid performance. The network architecture supports multiple communications technologies including cellular, Wi-Fi, radio frequency (RF) and power line communications (PLC). It also provides serial and Ethernet connections. The platform enables the integration of various smart grid applications, such as smart metering, demand response, distribution automation, distributed generation and electric vehicles into a common infrastructure.
