Amadeu Casellas

Amadeu Casellas Ramón is an anarchist prisoner.

He took part in robberies in banks in the 1970s as an income for labour struggles, fighting against injustice. The press called him the 'Spanish Robin Hood'. He became a member of PIS (Prisoners In Struggle) in the 1980s. He went on a hunger strike on 22 June 2008 for a number of reasons. He was against tortures in Catalonia prisons. And he was against those responsible for tortures: Spanish courts and politicians. At that time he had already been in prison for over 2 decades. According to Spanish law he had to be free. He thanked supporters from hospital. He thanked his mother, NCL trade union, his friends, the people writing to him, his lawyer Diana Reig and others (from his statement written on 27 August 2008). He was told he would get the so called 'third grade', which means better conditions in prison, and that he would be free, after 77 days on strike. He reached an agreement with Ignasi García Clavel, Director of Social Relations, and began to eat. He went on a hunger strike on 20 April 2009 as he was still in prison with no information about his promised freedom. No new agreements will be made until freedom.
