In 2008, the resort was forced to be shut down for a time because of sewage problems. The Ministry of Health declared that the hotel must be cleared and new guests could not be accepted in addition to new reservations. At the time of the closure, sewage trucks could be seen leaving the property. Residents of Guanacaste Province protested against several forms of contamination which originated from the waste products from the resort.
