Abubakar Umar Argungu

Umar Abubakar Tafida Argungu (born 1 May 1960) is a Nigerian politician, civil servant, businessman and the current Deputy Governor of Kebbi State. He assumed office on 29 May 2023 under Governor Nasir Idris.

Education

Abubakar began his educational path at Government Secondary School, Argungu, he pursued a National Certificate in Education (NCE) at Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto. He later advanced his studies at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Public Administration. He also attended University of Lagos.

Career

Umar's career took root in the Kebbi State civil service, where he held several administrative roles. He built a reputation for his commitment to policy implementation, grassroots development, and community-oriented governance. His service in local government spanned areas such as budget planning, youth development, and education initiatives. He was elected Senator for Kebbi North constituency of Kebbi State, Nigeria, taking office on 29 May 2007. He was a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He was also instrumental in coordinating rural development projects across Kebbi State. His extensive civil service background and community engagement brought him into prominence within the All Progressives Congress (APC). In the build-up to the 2023 general elections, he was chosen as the deputy governorship candidate alongside Dr. Nasir Idris. The duo ran a successful campaign and assumed office on May 29, 2023.
