Grant Humes is the Liberal candidate in Durham riding in Ontario in the May 2, 2011 Canadian Federal election.
Early life
Humes was born April 8, 1957 in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. His family moved to Willowdale in the early 1960s, and he has been a resident of Durham for 30 years.
He accepted the Liberal nomination on March 13, 2011 , 12 days before Stephen Harper’s Conservative government fell after opposition parties found the government in Contempt of Parliament.
Professional life
After attending University of Toronto, Humes began his 31 year business career with The Toronto Board of Trade. He held a variety of management positions in the organization, including General Manager of the Board of Trade Golf Club from 1991-2001. Humes also held leadership positions with several industry associations during this time, including serving as Ontario Branch President of the Canadian Society of Club Managers. He completed his career serving as the Board of Trade’s Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 2001 until he retired from the Board in March 2011.
2011 Federal Election
Humes will go up against embattled Conservative former cabinet minister Bev Oda in the May 2 Canadian Federal Election, in what The Toronto Star called one of the “Seven Hot Ridings to Watch in the GTA.”
Oda entered the election under something of the cloud, having just avoided being found in contempt of Parliament for first saying she didn’t know who had added the word “NOT” in a document which had, until addition of the word, extended funding to ecumenical justice group KAIROS , then, months later, admitting she had ordered insertion of the word which denied funding.
Humes said he is running because “Durham deserves better.”
Campaign
Humes has two campaign offices in Durham riding, in Bowmanville, at 67 King Street W., and Uxbridge, at 109 Brock Street W.
