Pacific Square is a combination shopping centre/apartment complex in Maroubra Junction, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. First opened in November 2004, it includes a Coles supermarket, 29 specialty shops and a town square which features an outdoor eating area surrounded by apartments and offices on the upper levels. The first stage of development cost $101M, with stage two coming in at $99M. The second stage of the Pacific Square redevelopment was completed in late 2007 with an Aldi supermarket and an additional 30 more specialty stores.
The second phase of the shopping centre opened in November 2007, with a Fitness First on the first level. Also on the first level is the Maroubra Medical Centre and Pacific Square Physiotherapy. The completion of this stage made Pacific Square Sydney's largest and most complex strata schemes.
One of the engineering and construction firms, Abigroup, achieved 2 awards for their part in the development. whom found a solution for stopping groundwater penetration from the Maroubra aquifer, which sits directly below the shopping center.
History
Pacific Square succeeded Maroubra Mall in 2004 as the major shopping centre in Maroubra Junction after the demolition of the factory outlet centre in 2002 and the completion of the shopping and apartment complex in 2004, known as Pacific Square. Up until 2000, Stockland owned and operated Maroubra Mall, then known as Stockland Maroubra. It featured a factory outlet centre (branded as Stockland Shop Smart until Stockland sold the centre in 2000) which included Australia's first GoodBuy Clearance Centre and 30 factory outlets plus a number of food outlets and restaurants. It also featured a courtyard area which featured a Coles supermarket, a Go-Lo discount variety store and (until 2000) BBC Hardware as its major stores.
On the night of 23 June 1998, the courtyard area of Stockland Maroubra was fire damaged, destroying at least eight shops. As it was late at night, and only the Coles supermarket was opened, 15 people were evacuated and there were no casualties or fatalities. Following the event, many shops in this area were closed or relocated from as little as a month up to about eleven months. The whole courtyard area was re-opened in May 1999.[http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:vTytm-TWpeUJ:www.ema.gov.au/ema/emadisasters.nsf/0/4055e9d2131e8c0dca256d330005817f%3FOpenDocument+stockland+maroubra+fire+damage&hlen&ctclnk&cd1&glau&client=firefox-a]
