Apps for Democracy, or APPS08 is an annual innovation contest for software and web developers, founded in 2008 by Vivek Kundra, CTO of Washington DC and iStrategyLabs. The intention of this competition is to reward technology developers with cash prizes and public recognition for creating applications that are useful for the DC government and the citizens, visitors and businesses of Washington, D.C.
Developers are encouraged to build a wide variety of mashups, including Web applications, wikis, widgets, map mashups, iPhone applications, and Facebook/OpenSocial applications. Teams or individuals work to develop visualization solutions from the District of Columbia's public data catalog.
The Apps for Democracy contest is part of the District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) drive toward digital democracy in the nation’s capital. The contest helps to find more efficient and impactful methods for delivering higher levels of service to citizens for a reduced cost.
The contest was founded to promote awareness of participatory democracy and development, as well as to excite developers about new, creative applications of technology. The contest runs in the early fall and ends in a award ceremony with Mayor Adrian Fenty.
History
The inaugural APPS08 had 47 application submissions; most of these entries were based in the Washington DC metro area. The contest was open to any individual. Apps for Democracy featured 60 cash prizes from $2000 to $100 dollars for a total of $20,000 in prizes. The medal-winning applications were announced on November 14, 2008.

Forbidden Truth is a melodic death metal band from Bangladesh with elements of melody and death metal in their songs. They are the first such bands of this genre in the country.
Formation
Forbidden Truth started out in the year 2003 with a group of musicians who wanted to become part of the rebellion which music personifies. They wanted to start up a craze for a new genre of music which did not exist in Bangladesh previously. At first the band consisted of Rumman (Vocal/Guitar),Rohan (Bass),Titash (Drums) and Nashat (Guitar). Then, in the October of 2003 Sajid joined as the vocals. Thus Rumman, who is amazing at riffs and stuff, was able to put more of his time, and efforts into making some kickass songs! Amazingly, he was also able to push the other members into doing some work.
As all bands know, the first main hurdle that they had to cross was the band name. None of the members seemed to be able to agree on any one of the names suggested by each other. Finally, the mastermind Rumman came up with the name "Forbidden Truth". Everyone liked this name, especially since it went so well with their style of music. The meaning of their name was simple. They stand for all those secrets that the corrupt society, powerful nations and dirty politicians were forever "Forbidden" to reveal to the common public. They basically symbolize Truth. They decided that their genre of music would be "Melodic Death" new to Bangladesh, they really did not expect to be as appreciated as they already have been, but then here again they faced some problems. Rohan has to leave the band after few days for personal problem and Tannu joined the band as the new Bass Guitarist. Rumman and Titash left the band for personal reasons and the band started to continue with their current and the best lineup with much more experienced musicians.
