THE ORIGIN-
(Authors note: This article is intended for informational purposes about the characters, story and projects around the history of, the current projects of, and the characters in "Buck Moon" past, presnt, and future.)
"Buck Moon", from a horror comedy story of the same name, is a character created by actor/comedian/director Jack Matych. The story is of a bounty hunter (Buck) and his clumsy sidekick Oswald.
"It started as a short story," says Matych, "Just this stupid little thing about a guy who wears sunglasses and shoots everything up. And I decided to write a short film script from titled 'The adventures of Buck Moon, Monster Hunter'."
After taking this short film script to his good friend and musician Luke Sayers of the band, The Dead Alives, whose opinion on horror films he appreciates, he didn't like it. So Jack re-wrote the script. This process continued a few times until he had finally set the script on a shelf.
A few months later, Sayers asked to see the script again and after reading it, had made a single suggestion which had motivated Matych to write the first draft of the feature length script.
THE MOVIE-
After enlisting the help of Grand Rapids writer, Justin Dickinson to help write the screenplay, Matych attemtped to find a way to make this feature length film. In 2005 from the sales of t-shirt he was able to make a short film based off of it called, "Buck Moon: Got your back".
GOT YOUR BACK-
"Got your back" takes place after the events in the feature length story and finds Buck and Oswald tracking down a werewolf-type creature. The opening line, "It wasn't even a full moon..." obviously leads us to understand that this creature is obviously not a werewolf.
Jack Matych plays Buck Moon, the gruff, chain smoking antihero-hero along with Jason Eller (of the band AFTERNINE) as Oswald, his jittery, clumsy sidekick.
The double part of the doctor and the creature was played by John Long (stage name), a good friend of Matych and fellow performer from many stage shows in the past.
UNLEASHING TO THE PUBLIC-
"Got your back" was offered as a home burned DVD for sale. Few copies were sold. After many requests to offer the short film online so people could watch it instead, Matych recorded a commentary with his cousin and production manager, Kacy Thatcher for the short film and released that in May 2007 in two parts online...
...Few got the joke.
-BUCK MOON: THE COMIC BOOK
In August of 2007, Matych was approached by Jeff Barnes and Royce VanLoon of Dark Matter Comics to make a comic book version of Buck Moon which they intend as their launch title.
A preview issue (Issue #0) is planned for a December 2007 release. The story will be a precursor to what would have been the feature length "Buck Moon", followed by the next five issues which will be the full story that has been in the works since 2001.
THE FUTURE OF BUCK MOON-
Matych and Co. are planning a number of projects in the future including a new short film, and ultimately getting the feature length film made...someday.
