Yash Daryanani

Yash Daryanani was trained by 1988 Olympics 100m butterfly gold medallist Anthony Nesty’s coach Kenneth MacDonald, made waves in international meets as a proficient swimmer representing Suriname and is now one of that country’s national coaches.

The son of Haresh and Pooja Daryanani, Yash was born in Chennai (then Madras) in 1981 and went to Suriname the following year. His father, a trader in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, and his mother, a homemaker, were quick to spot Daryanani’s swimming talent and started him off in competitive swimming in the late 1980s. Daryanani’s younger sister Tapasia born in Paramaribo in 1985 and encouraged by her brother also took to competitive swimming and together the brother – sister combo won more than 100 medals and certificates at the national level besides representing Suriname at international competitions. Yash also excelled in long distance swimming and at the age of 14 was the first boy in his age group to swim the 1 km backstroke in a time of 14.45.01 and the 1.5 km Backstroke in a time of 22.22.17

He then decided to go into coaching and became a qualified trainer in 2003. He coached swimmers at De Dolfijn one of the leading teams in Paramaribo and accompanied them to competitions in French Guyana and Curacao where his swimmers produced admirable results. It was obvious by now that Daryanani was equally proficient as a coach and recognition came his way when he was appointed as one of the national coaches of Suriname in 2009. He accompanied the national team to competitions in Aruba,Barbados,Jamaica and Puerto Rico and was proud of the fact that many of the swimmers in the squad were those he had trained at the De Dolfijn club where he continues as coach.
