Women's Support Network of York Region
The Women's Support Network of York Region is a nonprofit organization that serves the Regional Municipality of York in Ontario, Canada, operating with an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, feminist philosophy. The network focuses on providing support to [...] violence victims. Kelly Cameron is the network's Program Developer. The network hosts Go the Distance, an annual walk to raise awareness AbOUT [...] abuse and [...]. The network has specifically worked with the First Nations of Georgina Island. In March 2008, the Ontario Trillium Foundation gave the network $220,800 to fund a program in Georgina aimed at preventing boys in Grades 7 and 8 from becoming victims of [...] violence. In August 2011, Status of Women Canada gave the network $213,547 so they could support [...] trafficking victims and educate girls and women on this issue. In September 2013, Kellie Leitch, Minister responsible for the Status of Women and Minister of Labour, announced that the Government of Canada would be giving the network $200,000 in order to initiate a project aimed at eradicating human trafficking in York. Leitch appealed to the National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking when making the announcement. The project included one-on-one InterViews with human trafficking victims as well as focus groups. That November, Joy Smith, a Member of Parliament with the Conservative Party, held a panel discussion in opposition to [...], and the network was represented on the panel by human trafficking case worker Casandra Diamond.
