The Ruins of Gorlan

Will is first introduced in The Ruins of Gorlan, as a young orphaned boy living at the Ward in Castle Redmont in Araluen. He is shorter than average for his age and has a slight build, along with brown hair, pale skin, and brown eyes. He is great at climbing and quite accomplished in unseen movement (even without having had any formal training) and is notorious for stealing from the kitchen of Master Chubb (the head chef at Castle Redmont). He is also shown to have a dry sense of humour, first mentioned in this book when he climbed into one of the Scribemaster's studies in mid-spring and released a male and female rabbit. As the series progresses his wit is shown to be highly valued towards his friends as a stress-relief.

Teenagers in Redmont are required to become apprentices to a craftmaster of one of numerous crafts (Ranger Training, Battleschool, Diplomatic Service, Cooking School, Scribeschool, Armoury, Blacksmith among others) chosen skill, this all occurs on one day called the Choosing Day. Since he was very young, Will had wanted to become a a great knight like his dead father, however he was told by the Battle Master at Redmont, Sir Rodney, that he was to small to become a knight. After finding a piece of paper which he believed contained information AbOUT himself, he caught the eye of Halt, an experienced ranger who latter took Will under his wing as his Apprentice.
