Vidura College

Vidura College - Colombo is a leading secondary school in Colombo, Sri Lanka imparting education in the English medium.

Vidura follows the Government curriculum. Hence, it's a National School.

The unique characteristic of Vidura is its culture. Vidura upholds the cultural traditions of Sri Lanka maintaining a balance between the medium English and Sinhala.

Its curriculum is built around strict discipline and personality development in demand in the world of work. Thus, the mission of the school is to lead the child to a competitive world of work.

The School was conceived after an educational and market survey conducted in 1998 and it was decided to locate the school in Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte, the home for a large population of educationally enlightened parents. It is now located at No 22 Kirimandala Mawatha, Nawala, Rajagiriya.

However it is planned to shift the school to its new premises at Thalawathugoda by 2009. The college cricket playground and netball court was opened at Thalawathugoda premises on the 11th of August 2007.

History of Vidura College

Vidura College - Colombo was inaugurated on January 27, 1999 with the enrollment of 6 students to the Nursery and Grade 1 classes. The classes are held up to G.C.E.O/L with a student population over 2000.

The ever increasing demand for admission has compelled the College to operate in several houses close to each other.

Vision, Mission and Approach

The vision is the determination to serve the widest population of students who will have to face the challenges of the new millennium with the best language tool in communication -the English language- which would enable Sri Lanka to keep abreast of the rapid changes taking place in every sphere of life globally and thereby create a new class of English-educated youth with a truly national flavor to serve this beloved land without deserting it for greener pastures.

We endeavor to reach a substantial segment of the student population early enough for them to realize in time the ever increasing importance of education in English and broad educational experience and also to provide opportunities to those who are in want of the means to achieve it, before it is too late.

We are providing a cordial family atmosphere to master English while maintaining a high standard of Sinhala and providing an adequate opportunity to learn Tamil as a functional medium. The syllabi are designed in accordance with the learning objectives of the syllabi published by the Government of Sri Lanka. Students will be able to proceed for higher education in Sri Lanka tertiary educational institutes.

Vidura College - Colombo resting on the above three pillars stands out as a unique Institution in Sri Lanka.

It is a National School dedicated to promote the national culture, traditions and our cherished heritage, wielding English Language as a tool to achieve that noble goal.

Organization

The School is a duly registered enterprise managed by Shikshana Educational Investments and Consultants (Pvt) Ltd, a Company embarking into several areas of activity in the educational field. The management of Vidura College, Colombo, is in the custody of a Board of Directors comprising of several eminent educationalists and management leaders in Sri Lanka.

The Administration of the School is carried out by a distinguished Principal as its Chief Executive Officer.

The School is divided into four sections:

• Nursery: 3-4 years - Play group, Reception
• Primary: 5-9 years - Grade 1 to Grade 5
• Middle: 10-13 years - Grade 6 - Grade 9
• High: 14-16 years - Grade 10 - 12

After completing Grade 11 students will sit the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, as Private candidates.

Students proceeding further will sit the G.C.E (Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka after completing Grade 13.

Facilities will also be provided for students wishing to sit IGCSE or G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) London Examination.

Dress Code

• Boys - Dark blue, checked, short sleeved shirt with white collar, Navy blue shorts/ Trousers
• Girls - Dark blue, checked, short sleeved blouse with white collar, Navy blue pinafore.

School Colours and the Flag

The College colours are Dark Blue, Light Blue and Silver. The College flag is a three piece one with a White Triangle with logo at the center followed by two bands of Dark Blue and Light Blue.

Principal

D.G. Sumanasekera took the reins as the first Principal of Vidura College, Colombo, on January 27, 1999. In his capacity as Principal, Mr. Sumanasekera is responsible for the overall management of the School. He is assisted by a Board of Directors comprising of several eminent educationalists and management leaders in Sri Lanka.

A graduate of the University of Ceylon, Sumanasekera holds a Diploma in Education in the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura, Sri Lanka.

He possesses long and wide experience as the Chief Editor of Educational Publications Department, Principal of Nalanda College and Mahanama College in Colombo, Sri Lanka and as Principal of the Sri Lankan International School in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and as a Master Teacher at Government Secondary School, Daura, Nigeria.

His experience as an Examiner of the West African Examinations Council an his contribution to the activities of the Examination Department Of Sri Lanka is an asset in preparing students for public examinations.

This exposure speaks of the strengths that have gone into the administration of the school.

Administration

Vidura is enriched with a well qualified staff, the majority being graduates. The student-teacher ratio is 15:1. In-service staff development is carried out by the Principal and the Vice Principal.

College Houses

All the students of Vidura College are categorized into four houses. There are allocated colours for them.

• Sapphire - Blue
• Ruby - Red
• Emerald - Green
• Topaz - Yellow

Sapphire house is the leading house in the upper school while Emerald is leading in the lower school.

Sports Centre

The school provides opportunities for sports activities for the benefit of students. These activities are conducted in the afternoon session. Badminton, Swimming and Tennis will be conducted at hired facilities at Nawala and Nugegoda.

There are over 600 students taking part in one or more sports (extra curricular) activity incuding Scouting and Girl guiding.

• Indoor games: Badminton, Chess and Table Tennis
• Outdoor game: Swimming, Athletics, Cricket, Tennis and Netball

College Prize Giving

A Prize Giving will be held annually during the first term of the year. Prizes will be awarded to the best performer in each subject in a class, at the three term tests held during pervious year.

Best all rounder in each grade of the college is awarded challenge trophy.

• ICT Quiz competition 2007

Vidura College Grade 10 ICT team was placed the runners-up in ICT Quiz competition 2007 oraganized by Wesley College, Colombo.The students were trained by school I.T. Teacher Miss.Vathsala Karunanayake.

Vidura College under 13 Cricket team were runnrs-up in 30-over under 13 Invitation Cricket Tournament played on August 11 and 12, 2007.

• National Junior Badminton Championship, 2003

Shehan Ian Fernando of Vidura College - Colombo was placed the Runner up in Under 11 (boys) event.

• All Island Badminton Championship, 2002

The College under 10 (boys) team won the Division C Championship, while under 12 (boys) team were the Runners up in Division D.

Annual Concert

Annual Concert of Vidura College Upper Section was held at Devi Balika Main hall on October 26, 2007.

Annual Concert of the Vidura College was held on October 28, 2007 at Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo. Students from Grade 7 to Grade 10 participated in this event.
