Urban Poetry Project

The Urban Poetry Project (UPP) is a movement which believes in the power of poetry for change. Aimed at the dissemination of poetry in public places it is a protest against increasing levels of aggressive street advertising and seeks to involve public participation in the collective experience of the urban landscape. The UPP holds to the belief that change in society is inevitable, it's a matter of how it is manifested, and the public must strive to ensure it is change for the better through ACTIVE participation.

Protests

It attempts to achieve its aims through poetry and the remoulding of the urban environment. Two common approaches are taken the first of which involves the setting up of 'Poetry Walls' where the public are encouraged to engage in the project. The second approach is influenced by the Situationist idea of 'psychogeography' whereby specific lines are prose are matched to areas of the city locality in an attempt to alter the pedestrain's experience of the environment.
