Unley Concert Band
The City of Unley in Adelaide, South Australia, have their own Concert Band and Youth Concert Band. Both bands include players of brass instruments, woodwind instruments (including saxophone), and percussion instruments.
The MusicAL Director is Dr. Kevin Cameron, a well-established music educator and conductor, who received his initial musical training from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
The Unley Concert Band is the Senior Band who often perform in many concerts, community events, parades/pageants (including the Credit Union Christmas Pageant, also known as the Adelaide Christmas Pageant, as well as Adelaide's Anzac Day Parade), as well as compete regularly in State and National Championship competitions.
The Unley Concert Band received 1st-place in the A-Grade Concert Band category at the South Australian Band State Championships in 2002, 2003, and 2005. The band also placed equal 1st with the South Australian Police Rangers band in the 2006 South Australian Band State Championships in the A-Grade Concert Band category 1.
The Unley Concert Band also competes regularly in the B-Grade section at the Australian National Band Championships, which take place over the Easter weekend every year.
In 2007, the Australian National Band Championships were held in Melbourne, Victoria. Unley Concert Band came in 2nd place in B-Grade behind Geelong Concert Band from Victoria. The Tea Tree Gully Redbacks Concert Band, also from South Australia, came in 3rd place.
In 2008, the Unley Concert Band intend to participate in the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the 2nd-largest Fringe Festival in the world.
In 2009, the Unley Concert Band are planning a music tour of New Zealand.
In 2007, a new Unley Youth Band will be formed. It will consist of young musicians aged approximately 11 - 19 years old who have a playing standard approximately equivalent to A.M.E.B. Grade 3 or above.
Rehearsals for the Unley Youth Band will held on Wednesdays between 6pm-7:15pm at the Unley Town Hall. All prospective members are most welcome to join. Details of the first rehearsal will soon be released.
The Senior Band also welcomes any musician of any age and suitable playing standard who wishes to take part. Rehearsals take place between 7:30pm-9:30pm every Wednesday during school terms at the Unley Town Hall (Corner of Unley Road and Oxford Terrace, directly opposite the Unley Shopping Centre).
Both the Unley Concert Band and the Unley Youth Band always welcome new brass, woodwind, and percussion instrumentalists to join at any time during the year.
