TSS - Transport Simulation Systems

TSS - Transport Simulation Systems is one of the market leading developers of transport modelling software Aimsun and Aimsun Online.

Aimsun is used by government agencies, municipalities, universities and consultants worldwide for traffic engineering, traffic simulation, transportation planning and emergency evacuation studies.

Aimsun is an integrated transport modelling software used to improve road infrastructure, reduce emissions, cut congestion and design urban environments for vehicles and pedestrians.

Aimsun Online is a real-time traffic forecasting solution used by traffic control centres to make real-time decisions AbOUT the management of road networks.

TSS originated in 1986 and was founded commercially in 1997. It is headquartered in Barcelona, Spain and works with regional distributors to service over 1,300 users in 55 countries. The company has around 30 employees.

History

TSS is the culmination of a research programme which began in 1986. Since its commercial foundation in 1997, the company has grown to be one of the market leaders in transport modelling software.

Academic and research origins

TSS originated in 1986 as a research project carried out by LIOS, a research group at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).

Backed by funding from the Spanish Government and the European Union, the LIOS research projects resulted in the development of a microscopic simulator called Aimsun. This began inside a shell called GETRAM running on UNIX.

The research team worked closely with the DHV Group (a provider of consultancy and engineering services for transportation and environmental planning based in The Netherlands) to develop the software further.

1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona

Aimsun was used for the planning of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. It was used to assess the impact of the large works which were needed for the Games. It contributed to the completion and improvement of the city road network infrastructure, including a 43km long ring-road for the city.

Commercial foundation

In 1997, the company was launched as a commercial enterprise by 7 partners, including current executive team members Jaime L. Ferrer (Managing Director), David García (Technical Director) and Dr Jordi Casas (R&D Director).

The company has a singular focus on developing and marketing transport modelling software for traffic engineering, management and operations. TSS has been steadily growing since, currently servicing over 1,300 users in 55 countries, and has expanded into decision support for real-time traffic management with Aimsun Online. There have been 8 commercial releases of Aimsun since the company was founded.

TSS still works with the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya helping to fund a research team and R&D activities.
