Toshiba HD-XA1
The Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD player was released in the North American market in April, 2006. The HD-XA1 and its cheaper companion player, the Toshiba HD-A1, were the first commercially available standalone HD DVD players released on the market. The player retailed for US$799 at its release, and was discontinued and replaced by the HD-XA2 in January 2007. The HD-XA1 (and HD-A1) incorporate an Intel Corp. 2.5GHz Pentium M 4 CPU, 1 GB of Hynix DDR RAM, and four 32-bit Analog Devices SHARC DSPs. The player's Linux-based operating system is stored in an M-Systems USB flash drive. Both machines use an NEC HR-1100A optical disc drive. Mechanically, the HD-XA1 differs from the HD-A1 by its inclusion of an electronically operated dropdown door, an RS232 port, a more rigid chassis and anti-vibration feet. The HD-XA1 was packaged with a motion-activated backlit remote control; the remote control included with the HD-A1 was not backlit.
The HD-XA1 is firmware upgradable via CD-ROM or directly through its integrated Ethernet port. The most recent firmware version is 2.4, released in November 2007.
In February 2007 the HD-XA1 won Sound and Vision Magazine's 2006 Product of the Year Award.
