Tom Newman (musician, producer)

Tom Newman (born 1973, Detroit) is an electronic musician, producer, and DJ most commonly associated with the third wave of Detroit techno artists. In the early 1990's, he was the first DJ from Detroit to play exclusively acid records. Under his alias Acidpimp, he was a major figure in the mid to late 1990's techno, acid techno, and rave scenes, performing internationally, and releasing a number of acid techno records on the Detroit label Cheshire Records, which was a label that was originally distributed exclusively through Daniel Bell's 7th City. In 1998, Tom Newman helped form D-Records with other Detroit record producers Rex Sepulveda and Len Bartush. Originally founded by Richie Hawtin as a sub label of Minus, and now managed by Paxahau, D-Records helped evolve Tom Newman's production beyond the TB-303 driven acid techno sound. Also during this era Tom Newman founded Friction Detroit, a promotions group who organized techno-only events, and was responsible for bringing many European techno artists and DJs to North America for the first time.

Currently, Tom Newman continues to both DJ, and hold live performances of original material. He also holds a management position at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.
