Tom Hayhurst

Dr. Thomas Eldon Hayhurst is a retired pulmonologist, outgoing Fort Wayne City Councilman and the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for the third congressional district in Indiana. He did both his undergraduate and doctoral work at the Bloomington campus of Indiana University. He is a veteran from the Vietnam War era, having served in Michigan as a doctor in the United States Air Force.

Dr. Hayhurst announced on 9 January 2007 that he would not seek re-election to his Council seat in the 2007 election.

2006 Congressional campaign

Hayhurst won the Democratic primary election over Rev. Kevin Boyd on 2 May 2006. Hayhurst raised $508,182 and contributed $200,000 of his own money to his campaign. Hayhurst was defeated by Rep. Mark Souder in the November 2006 general election, 54%-46%. Hayhurst won the City of Fort Wayne but lost to Souder in every county of the district.

Hayhurst filed a report with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) terminating his campaign committee on 29 December 2006. It has been reported by two different journalists that Hayhurst will not run for Congress in 2008.
