Timeline of the Turkey – Kurdistan Workers' Party conflict

The following is a detailed timeline of the Turkey–Kurdistan Workers Party conflict.

2009

• On Tuesday, December 8, seven Turkish paramilitary soldiers were killed and three wounded when their vehicle was ambushed by seven PKK gunmen in Resadiye, Tokat Province.

• On Monday, May 4, four assailants bearing rifles and grenades opened fire on a wedding reception in the village of Sultankoy, some 20 kilometres from Mardin, [...] 44 people (a toll which may yet rise) and wounding seventeen more. Although the attack has not yet been categorically linked to the conflict, suspicions are naturally high.

2008

• February 21, 2008-February 29, 2008: Turkey's military conducted a military offensive code-named operation Sun in northern Iraq. 24 soldiers and three village guards were killed along with 237 PKK militants during the ground fighting and an additional 300 militants were killed in air-strikes in the previous months.

• February 23, 2008: Fighting in Hakkari province. One soldier was killed.

• March 7, 2008: Kidnapping incident by PKK militants on the border with Syria. One civilian was killed.

• March 12, 2008: Fighting on the Iraq border. 11 PKK militants were killed.

• March 27, 2008-March 31, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Sirnak province. Three soldiers were killed and 10 wounded.

• March 28, 2008: Turkish air strikes in northern Iraq. 15 PKK militants were killed.

• April 1, 2008-April 2, 2008: Fighting in Sirnak province. Three soldiers and 16 PKK militants were killed and five soldiers were wounded.

• April 5, 2008: A roadside bomb attack in Sirnak province. One village guard was killed.

• April 9, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Tunceli province. 11 PKK militants were killed.

• April 15, 2008: Turkish air strikes in northern Iraq and fighting in Sirnak province. 21 PKK militants were killed.

• April 16, 2008: Fighting in Sirnak province. One soldier was killed and 13 were wounded.

• April 21, 2008-April 22, 2008: Two roadside bomb attacks on the border with Iraq. Five soldiers were killed and two wounded.

• April 25, 2008: Fighting in Sirnak province. Two soldiers were killed.

• April 26, 2008: Fighting in Sirnak province. Two soldiers and one village guard were killed.

• May 1, 2008: The Turkish air force conducted a raid on a PKK base in the Qandil Mountains in northern Iraq [...] 150 militants.

• May 9, 2008: PKK militants attacked a military outpost on the border with Iraq. Six soldiers and 19 PKK militants were killed. In addition a landmine blast on the border killed three civilians.

• May 10, 2008-May 14, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Hakkari province. 30 PKK militants were killed.

• May 17, 2008: A security operation was conducted on the border with Iraq. Six PKK militants and one civilian were killed.

• May 22, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Sirnak province. Two soldiers and two PKK militants were killed and one soldier was wounded.

• May 23, 2008: Fighting on the Iran border. One village guard and one PKK militant were killed.

• May 25, 2008-May 26, 2008: Fighting in Sirnak province. One village guard and three PKK militants were killed.

• May 28, 2008: Fighting on the Iran border. Two PKK militants were killed.

• June 17, 2008: A security operation was conducted on the Iraq border. 21 PKK militants were killed.

• July 11, 2008-July 12, 2008: Fighting in Tunceli, Sirnak and Bingol provinces. Three soldiers and one civilian were killed.

• July 16, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Hakkari province. 11 PKK militants were killed.

• July 18, 2008: Fighting in southeastern Turkey. 10 PKK militants were killed.

• July 27, 2008: Two bombs exploded in Istanbul [...] 17 people.

• July 30, 2008: A landmine blast in Osmaniye province. Three soldiers were wounded.

• August 11, 2008: A roadside bomb attack in Erzincan province. Nine soldiers were killed and two were wounded.

• August 17, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Sirnak province. Three PKK militants were killed.

• August 18, 2008: A landmine blast in Hakkari province. One soldier was killed.

• August 26, 2008: Fighting in Bitlis province. Five village guards and 16 PKK militants were killed.

• August 31, 2008: A rebel ambush in Bingol province. Four soldiers and two PKK militants were killed and three soldiers were wounded.

• September 5, 2008: Landmine explosion in Sirnak province. Two soldiers killed.

• September 7, 2008: A security operation was conducted in Hakkari province. Three soldiers and three village guards were killed.

• September 22, 2008: Roadside bomb attack in Hakkari province. One soldier was killed and one wounded.

• October 1, 2008: One soldier was killed, with another one wounded, in an attack staged by PKK militants in southeastern Turkey.

• October 4, 2008: PKK militants attacked a military outpost in the Semdinli region bordering Iraq and Iran firing heavy weapons from northern Iraq. 17 Turkish soldiers and 25 PKK militants were killed and 20 soldiers were wounded.

• October 16, 2008: Fighting in Hakkari and Sirnak provinces. Five soldiers and 35 PKK militants were killed and 15 soldiers were wounded.

2007

• May 22, 2007: A [...] bombing in Ankara killed nine people, including one foreigner.
• May 24, 2007: A landmine explosion in Sirnak province. Six soldiers were killed and 10 wounded.
• June 4, 2007: [...] bomb attack on a military outpost in Tunceli province. Seven soldiers were killed and seven wounded.
• July 5, 2007: Fighting in Bingol and Tunceli provinces. One village guard and three PKK militants were killed.
• July 9, 2007: A report confirmed that at least 67 soldiers and 110 PKK militants had been killed in fighting on the Iraq border since the start of the year, including the already above mentioned 13 soldiers and three militants killed during the period.
• July 13, 2007: Fighting in Bingol and Erzincan provinces. Two soldiers were killed and one wounded.
• August 24, 2007: Fighting on the Iraq border. Two soldiers and 10 PKK militants were killed.
• September 12, 2007: A security operation was conducted in Siirt province. Four PKK militants were killed.
• September 13, 2007-September 28, 2007: A security operation was conducted in Sirnak province. 20 PKK militants were killed.
• September 22, 2007: Fighting on the Iraq border. A soldier was killed, earlier in the week.
• September 25, 2007: Fighting in Tunceli and Sirnak provinces. Two soldiers and four PKK militants were killed and four soldiers were wounded.
• September 27, 2007: Landmine explosion in Bitlis province. Two soldiers were killed.
• September 29, 2007: PKK ambush on a bus in Sirnak province. Seven village guards and five civilians were killed.
• October 1, 2007-October 21, 2007: A series of clashes happened in the province of Hakkari. 25 soldiers and 35 PKK militants were killed, also eight soldiers were captured and 19 wounded.
• October 4, 2007: Fighting in Mardin province. Three PKK militants were killed.
• October 8, 2007: Landmine explosion in Diyarbakir province. One soldier was killed and three wounded.
• October 16, 2007: Roadside bomb attack on the Iraq border. One soldier was killed.
• October 25, 2007: Military artillery attack in Semdinli province. 30 PKK militants were killed.
• October 28, 2007-October 29, 2007: Fighting in Sirnak and Tunceli provinces. Two soldiers and 17 PKK militants were killed.
• November 7, 2007: Fighting in Sirnak province. One soldier and three PKK militants were killed.
• November 12, 2007: Fighting in Sirnak province. Four soldiers were killed and nine wounded. A report also confirmed that more than 50 soldiers were killed in fighting since September, including the already above mentioned 46 soldiers killed during the period.
• December 4, 2007-December 5, 2007: Fighting in Sirnak province. One soldier and 14 PKK militants were killed.
• December 5, 2007: Mortar attack in Hakkari province. One soldier was killed and six wounded.

2006

• January 1, 2006-May 3, 2006: Fighting throughout southeastern Turkey. 14 soldiers and nearly 40 PKK militants have been killed during this period.
• May 3, 2006: A roadside bomb attack in Hakkari province. Eight soldiers were wounded.
• May 12, 2006: Landmine explosion in Hakkari province. One soldier was killed.
• July 11, 2006: Ambush in Sirnak province. Two policemen were killed.
• July 13, 2006: A landmine explosion in Bitlis province. Five soldiers were killed and four wounded.
• July 15, 2006: Fighting in Sirnak province. One PKK militant was killed.
• July 16, 2006: Ambush in Siirt province. Seven soldiers and one village guard were killed.
• July 17, 2006: Fighting in Batman province. Two PKK militants were killed.
• July 21, 2006: Fighting in Van and Sirnak provinces. Two soldiers and four PKK militants were killed and three soldiers were wounded.
• July 27, 2006: Landmine explosion in Bingol province. One soldier was killed and two were wounded.
• July 30, 2006: Landmine explosion and roadside bomb attack in Bingol and Diyarbakir provinces. One village guard and one civilian were killed.
• July 31, 2006: By the end of July, since the start of the year, 91 soldiers were confirmed to have been killed in fighting with the PKK, including the already above mentioned 30 soldiers.
• August 15, 2006: Fighting on the Iraq border. Two soldiers were killed.
• August 28, 2006: A bomb exploded in Antalya [...] three people.
• September 13, 2006: A bomb exploded in Diyarbakir [...] 10 people. It was confirmed that seven soldiers were killed and five wounded during fighting since the start of the month.

2005

• April 12, 2005-April 15, 2005: A security operation was conducted in Siirt province. Three soldiers and 21 PKK militants were killed.
• June 5, 2005: Ambush in Tunceli province. Four soldiers were killed and one wounded.
• July 2, 2005: A bomb exploded on a passenger train in Bingol province [...] six people.
• July 12, 2005: Kidnapping incident by PKK militants in Tunceli province. One soldier was captured.
• July 16, 2005: A bomb exploded on a minibus in Kuşadası [...] five people, a British and an Irish tourist were among the dead.
• August 5, 2005: A roadside bomb attack in Hakkari province. Five soldiers were killed and six wounded. Another six soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb earlier in the month.
• December 31, 2005: Up to 97 soldiers were killed in fighting with the PKK during the year, including the already above mentioned 18 soldiers.

2004

• October 25, 2004: Landmine explosion in Diyarbakir province. Two soldiers were killed and four wounded.
• December 31, 2004: Up to 26 soldiers were killed in fighting with the PKK since the collapse of the cease-fire in June, including the already above mentioned two soldiers.
