TIME Ethernet LAN

TIME Ethernet LAN is a telecommunication service that allows geographically dispersed sites to share an Ethernet broadcast domain offered by TIME dotCom Berhad in Malaysia. According to their website at http://www.time.com.my, TIME Ethernet LAN is a way to provide Ethernet based multipoint-to-multipoint communication over IP/MPLS networks. It also lets users use bandwidth more efficiently than point-to-point connectivity, creating the appearance of all their sites on a single Ethernet access circuit.

LAN

A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small physical area, like a home, office, or small group of buildings, such as a school, or an airport. The defining characteristics of LANs, in CONTRAST to wide-area networks (WANs), include their usually higher data-transfer rates, smaller geographic area, and lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines.

ARCNET, Token Ring and many other technologies have been used in the past, and G.hn May Be used in the future, but Ethernet over twisted pair cabling, and Wi-Fi are the two most common technologies currently in use.

MPLS

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS is a mechanism in high-performance telecommunications networks which directs and carries data from one network node to the next. MPLS makes it easy to create "virtual links" between distant nodes. It can encapsulate packets of various network protocols. MPLS is a highly scalable, protocol agnostic, data-carrying mechanism. In an MPLS network, data packets are assigned labels. Packet-forwarding decisions are made solely on the contents of this label, without the need to examine the packet itself. This allows one to create end-to-end circuits across any type of transport medium, using any protocol. The Primary benefit is to eliminate dependence on a particular Data Link Layer technology, such as ATM, frame relay, SONET or Ethernet, and eliminate the need for multiple Layer 2 networks to satisfy different types of traffic. MPLS belongs to the family of packet-switched networks.

History

Previously known as Metro LAN, TIME dotCom change the name to TIME Ethernet LAN by the end of 2009. However, there are no information on when TIME dotCom launched this service.

Availability

Similar to TIME Ethernet Leased Line, the service are only available in buildings on TIME's Metro Ethernet Network, which TIME dotCom call these Metro Ethernet RFS (Ready For Service) buildings.
