Thomas Hudson Connell

Thomas Hudson Connell is a Connecticut-based artist whose works span more than 4 decades. His focus is primarily on large abstract oil paintings, incorporating natural elements. He is also an accomplished landscape painter.

Early life and education

Career

After leaving the service he spent several years in the Sales Promotion and Advertising Department Of Connecticut Mutual Life while going to night law school. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Connecticut in 1966.

He had a dynamic legal career, including being sworn into the Supreme Court of America. He was the Republican Candidate for Connecticut's 2nd congressional district in 1978. While Christopher Dodd won the election, Mr. Connell garnered 50,167 votes (30.07%).

He recently retired from practicing law, leaving a position as the President of a Hartford, Connecticut law firm. Upon retiring, in addition to painting, Mr. Connell uses his other talents to work as a Volunteer Naturalist at the Wellfleet Bay Audubon Sanctuary, Massachusetts.

Artistic career

A recognized artist in New England, he has been interviewed on a local television show in Massachusetts which features unique artists. His work has also been featured several New England papers; most recently The Hartford Courant- itowns section (6/7/09).

His artistic influences are Mark Rothko, Wolf Kahn and his own observations as a Naturalist. He draws inspiration from the world around him, often focusing his attention on a single detailed element such as a flower or a bird skull.

Mr. Connell's artistic background includes numerous showings throughout Connecticut & Massachusetts since the 1960s. He has had five one man art shows between 2004-2009. A primarily self-taught artist, he has taken classes at various institutions and museums including the Hartford Atheneum in Connecticut.

Mr. Connell's talents include traditional land and seascapes as well as large abstracts and life studies. He paints mainly in oil and acrylic on gesso primed masonite. His large scale abstracts typically range 30 by 40 inches.
