The University of Iceland Science web

The University of Iceland Science web (in Icelandic Vísindavefurinn) is a website upheld by the University of Iceland. Its purpose is to reach out to the general public and provide answers to questions from the general public about anything concerning arts and sciences. Currently the web has three employees in addition to the general editor, Þorsteinn Vilhjálmsson. Most of the answers are written by scholars who are not employed by the web.

The web was initially set up as part of the "open university" project, which, again, was part of a larger project by the city of Reykjavík in 2000, when Reykjavik was on of Europe's designated "cultural cities". The web was initiated on January 29 2000 by Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, president of Iceland. Its popularity led to its continued existence after the formal end of the "open university" project.

The website has a limited number of answers in English
