The Retro Spankees
The Retro Spankees are a band based in Northampton, England. The website Drowned In Sound describes them as "indie-punk rockers".
The band were originally formed in 2002 as a two piece; they gradually added members from the University of Northampton where they were all studying. Their songs cover diverse and unusual topics such as how ants perceive human beings and football hooligans.
Their first demo, Duplo Microso was followed up by Eggs Are Fragile, Handle With Care. The two demos lead to a one-album contract with Northampton-based label Kookydiscs (leading to the interesting distinction of their being the only Northampton-based band on the label).
Their first single for the label, My Sonic Driver, released in April 2005, was launched on 31st March at the Picturedrome, Northampton. The first album, I Know You Are But What Am I? was released in March 2006. A second single, a double a-side of Vowel Play (the band's tribute to late Countdown host Richard Whiteley) and Out Like One is scheduled to be released on the first anniversary of his death, June 26.
In 2006, Charlie, Josh and Robert starred alongside Noddy Holder in Misty's Big Adventure single Fashion Parade. The Retro Spankees play the part of a trendy new band that makes ‘lots of money’ by copying the music styles and images of current major artists.
