The Quiet Club
The Quiet Club is a collaboration of Danny Mc Carthy and Mick O'Shea, two Irish sound artists and improvising musicians. They perform using a wide variety of INSTRUMENTS including circuit bent electronics, home-made acoustics, table-top guitar, and contact microphones. Their sound TEXtures are derived from stones, toys, strings, oscilloscopes, Theremin, field recordings and many other sources. They are known for durational performances of quiet intensity.
The Quiet Club are part of the Cork, Ireland electroacoustic music scene that has seen them collaborating with numerous guest artists including Mark Wastell, Viv Corringham, Christian Carley, John Godfrey, and The Quiet Music Ensemble. Since 2005 they have curated Sonic Vigil, a single-day festival that includes installations and performance and lasts for six or more hours. This has been hosted by St Fin Barr’s Cathedral, Triskel Arts Centre, and (in 2012) at St. Anne's Church, Shandon. Co-curators for Sonic Vigil have included Gruenrekorder Records.
The duo have appeared at festivals in Ireland, England, Germany, Canada, and Japan. These have included Lost Shadows 2 (Factory, Berlin), Dublin Electronic Arts Festival, Static (Liverpool), and the I & E Festival (Dublin).
With Anthony Kelly, Irene Murphy, and David Stalling The Quiet Club created The Strange Attractor project for a successful residency in the Crawford Gallery, Cork, Ireland. Their durational projects incorporated world-renowned artists such as Stephen Vitiello, Steve Roden, David Toop, Alessandro Bosetti, Jed Speare, Rhodri Davies, Lee Patterson, Mel Mercier, and Mary Nunan. This project resulted in a book and DVD release, as well as a follow-on performance in Cafe Oto (London, UK).
Their interest in opening up the collaborative process has seen The Quiet Club work with many Irish-based artists. Examples include a gig at the Roisin Dubh with Katie O'Looney and an improvisation with Harry Moore (artist) and Robin Parmar at the The Drogheda Arts Festival.
Recently they were featured on Wire magazine's WIRETAPPER 23 CD compilation. With Anthony Kelly and David Stalling they released SOUNDCAST 4x4+1. Their own CD TESLA is available on Farpoint Recordings.
