The nod
“The Nod"
-Created circa 1994 in a freshman biology class by two friends, Lou and Todd, in Cincinnati, OH. It originated during a discussion the two were having about the game Quarters they used to play before class. Both Lou and Todd were trying to remember the rules for the game and when they finally agreed they both started to do “The Nod”
-There are many variations of “The Nod.” (This is not all, just some of the best)
1. After a state of confusion, one finally gets the meaning and begins to nod in agreement. -“The Nod”
2. Someone is talking and you are really just half listening because he/she
is boring the life out of you. You throw in the occasionally nod so as to
not appear rude. -“The Being Nice Nod”
3. Someone is describing something which peaks your interest and you
nod along as they go into more detail. -“The Tell Me More Nod”
4. When you are on the fence about a certain situation. It starts with the
side to side nod and after you make your decision it switches to the up
and down nod. -“The On-the Fence Nod”
5. When someone is playing you some new music and you are really
grooving along and nod with the music. -“The Music Nod”
6. When an attractive person of the opposite sex walks by you and you
nod your head in approval. “The Damn You Good Looking Nod”
7. When you did something wrong and during the discussion all you can
do is nod in disappointment. -“The Disappointment Nod”
8. When you walk into a group conversation and begin to nod so people
think you know what they hell they are talking about, but you really
have no clue. -“The What the Hell are You Talking About Nod”
9. When someone tells you a joke and you are trying to figure out the
punchline, finally you get it and nod. -“The What for It Nod”
10. After your favorite sports team makes an awesome play you stand,
clap, and nod. -“The Stand, Clap, and Nod Nod”
-The action of "The Nod" is often immitated, but never quite as good as the original. To achieve perfect "Nod" status one must curl the lower lip out, tilt the head slightly to the right, and move the head in a North/South direction. Repeat as long as necessary.
-If you see someone doing “The Nod” please remember to give a “Nod” out to the creators of this fascinating non-verbal communication skill. Lou and Todd do not seek fame or fortune for creating such a gift to the human race, just that you pass it on to the next generation of nodders.
