The Mustachios
The Mustachios is an annual event, which takes place in the glorious Napa Valley on the day after Thanksgiving every year. The event started with humble beginnings back in the fall of 2004 as a gathering of a mere 12 gentlemen sporting mustaches and taking a trip up the Napa Valley to go wine tasting and rejoice in each other’s company. The idea was quite simple. Everyone would grow their finest mustache in celebration of the reunion of old friends and to commemorate one of the greatest mustache wearers of all time, Tom Selleck. There would be a judging of one another’s mustaches with awards given for the “Creepiest”, “Most Inspirational”, “Most Valuable” and “Lifetime Achievement”. Upon hearing of the fun that was had in the first year, there were many requests to attend the next year’s festivities. At this point some simple rules were put into effect to help govern the men and women that would attend.
For the men:
1) The growing season would commence on September 1st at which point all upper lips would be clean shaven.
2) No hair may grow below the crease of the lips. Hair may hang over the crease but may not be attached to the face.
For the women:
1) Show up in your finest 80’s prom dress.
In the years that followed, the event blossomed with the attendance at the 2007 Mustachios toping 135 people. Attendees hail from all over the world including Ireland, England, British Columbia, Chicago, and all over California. A few new categories were created including “Rookie of the Year”, “Most Improved”, “Best [...] Stache”, and for the ladies “Miss Mustachio”, and “Most Likely to Ride a Mustache”. In 2007, The Mustachios began raising money for charity and were able to gather $1000 to donate to the UCSF Children's Hospital. A goal of raising $10,000 has been set for the 2008 Mustachios.
