The Magic Lantern Show
Formed in Glasgow, Scotland, The Magic Lantern Show began in 2002 and went through a few line-up changes before settling on a stable, winning formula. The band draws on the songwriting / storytelling abilities of Kenny Thoms and John O'Toole who have produced an excellent set of songs which create imagery and weave stories as they unravel. Mirroring this, the Magic Lantern Show thrives on other pairings which have been fused together within the strong group dynamic.
Kenny Thoms multi-talented skills on Keyboard, Violin and Guitar and Paul Hardie on Drums / Percussion are often, logistically, to the side and rear of the band's performances but their MusicAL skills provide a strong spine for the other band members to build on.
Guitarist Steven Soave's energetic and dynamic performance is perfectly offset by Bass Guitarist Piotr (Pete) Ciuchta's cool and skillful delivery and they play off one another so well, that it is almost a show within a show. This double act really bring Thoms and O'Toole's songwriting to vibrant life with their Ying and Yang execution.
Lastly, but equally as important as the others, John O'Toole's velvet vocals provide the voice of the band, Ably assisted by the harmony of Laura Smith's angelic voice, which complement each other so very well throughout the varied song list. O'Toole's voice has that unique quality which not only draws your ears towards it but will leave you craving for more, long after he has left the stage.
In 2009, they entered the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections in Glasgow and after impressing the judges, were voted as one of the winners.
Due to their Danny Kyle success they gained several spots in Celtic Connections 2010 culminating at the ABC, Glasgow where they supported Scottish Folk singer/songwriter [...] Gaughan, Scottish/Canadian reggae star Jason Wilson and highly influential fiddler Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention fame. Their performance showed they belong amongst such esteemed company.
Their debut album was released in January, 2010 and the song list is as follows
1. Idolise 2. In Between 3. Save Me 4. So Easy 5. Silver Fishes 6. Fragile 7. Rainy Day
