The Linc (newspaper)

The Linc is a student newspaper at the University of Lincoln, UK.

History

Founded in 2007 by Dave Lee , now a BBC journalist, The Newspaper quickly became the premier source of information on student-related topics. Under Dave Lee’s leadership, in 2007/2008 The Linc covered some of the most important stories on and around campus, and established a solid online presence.

However, members of the initial team were due to finish their courses, so in the 2008/2009 academic year, the reins of The Linc were handed to Daniel Ionescu as Editor and Hayley Cook as Sports Editor. During 2008/2009, The Linc went through a redesign and switched formats to a quarter fold newspaper. The publication also expanded its coverage with local stories, which was also reflected by the distribution of the printed version in selected coffee shops and locations across Lincoln.

In May 2009, The Linc unveiled its newly redesigned website, heralding a new era in the paper's history. The Linc was the first Lincoln student publication to update its website with fresh content and breaking news on a daily basis. The popularity of the website quickly soared, alongside the investigations and analysis found in the printed versions to follow in the 2009/2010 academic year. A new logo was introduced, and the printed version returned to the tabloid format, this time in full colour pages.

Awards and nominations

At the 2008 University of Lincoln Students’ Union Media Awards, The Linc won the Headline of the Year, Best Reporting, Innovation Award, Sporting Chance, getting the most awards in the competition. The crowning title, Editor of the Year, was awarded to Dave Lee.

At the 2009 University of Lincoln Students’ Union Media Awards, The Linc swept the awards panel again, winning Headline of the Year, Best Reporting and the Best Supporting Individual, Daniel Ionescu getting the Editor of the Year award.

In November 2009, The Linc was shortlisted by the Guardian as having one of the best student websites in the country . The Linc was part of the final 21 shortlisted for the Guardian Student Media Awards 2009, which has seen over 800 applications this year.

The Linc was also been nominated for a BBC Innovation award at the 2010 Connect and Create conference 1.

Funding

The Linc is an independent student publication, whose online daily operations are maintained via funds from its dedicated editorial staff. The printed versions of The Linc are funded by the Lincoln School of Journalism, who is also consulted in legal and ethics matters.

In 2010, The Linc will be taking another step forward, introducing a limited amount of advertising into its online and print pages, to fund further expansion plans.
