The Hurricane Cricket Club

The University of Miami Cricket Team, or the Hurricane Cricket Club has been in inception since 1987. The club had gone through of waves of inactivity after initial successes before being brought back to life by undergrad Kalpesh Patel in the fall of 2008. The “sports club" as it is referred to by the University currently has over 20 active members representing countries from all over the world, making it one of the most diverse cricket playing squads in the entire world.

Annual Best of the World Championship

Due to the large West Indian and Indian populations that make up the team, the club designed a match between an Indian Super IX team and a West Indian Super IX team in October of 2008. This was the first official cricket match ever to be played at the University of Miami, and attracted the attention of over 40 spectators, and the University of Miami Student Newspaper – The Hurricane. Due to the overwhelming success of the game, a re-match was scheduled for late November, this time between the Eastern and Western All Stars. The reason for the name change was that after the initial match was held, the club started to receive bids for membership from persons in places outside the test arena. In an effort to spread the game to cultures outside of the current cricket playing nations a decision was made to host this annual “East Versus West championship” every October.

Recent Activity

The Hurricane Cricket recently participated in American College Cricket’s first ever Spring Break Championship held in Lauderhill, Florida in March of 2009. The team played very well , winning one game (against Boston College) and losing two (including a close thriller against Carnegie Mellon ). Overall the team placed 4th in the competition, and is looking to improve on that performance in next year’s tourney.
