The Egyptian Kings

The Egyptian Kings were a 5 piece pop/punk band formed in Derby in 1982 by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Russell Maw when his previous band After-Math UK folded.

The Line-up

Maw had been an embryonic member of Anti-Pasti and played with The Enemy. The band comprised Steve 'Tree' Bailey (drums), Carl Lievers (guitar), and Chris ‘Dog’ Anderson (bass). After building up a sizeable following in 1985 Jon Watkins was added on keyboards. The band were championed in their early years by Terry Christian and were frequent guests on his Radio Derby shows.

In 1986 the band signed to Native Records and recorded the debut single ‘Peppermint Cream’(NTV 21), but the band left the label over artistic direction and the single was deleted. In 1988 the band's proposed second single ‘She Said, She Said’ was recorded but again problems with record labels forced a cancellation.

The Split

Finally in 1990 a single ‘Matter Of Time’ was released on the band's own label but a change in management provoked disagreements and disenchantment set in. Bailey, Anderson, and new guitarist Julian Berry formed The Beekeepers who had some success, Maw joined local folk rockers The Newcranes before continuing in his own bands.
