The Astute Recorder

The Astute Recorder is a monthly online magazine focusing on food, leisure and preservation.
The Southern California-based magazine appeals internationally. The main columns include "All the Presidents' Foods," which references historical papers and notes to uncover what the U.S. Presidents once ate; "Sweet Justice," a dessert column by Los Angeles pastry chef Jud Kilgore; and "Postcards from Paradise," a Hawai'i travel column by author-photographer Phillip Roberts, whose upcoming book "Waikiki Tiki," is scheduled for publication through Bess Press in Winter 2009.
Started in 2008, the magazine covers lighthouse travel in "Food and Fresnel," (Fresnel is a reference to the inventor of the multi-prismed lens used to provide the light from the maritime beacons) as well as personality profiles and music reviews. In 2008, the magazine delved into the music of lyricist, musician and producer pc muñoz, who produced "Strange Toys" for cellist Joan Jeanrenaud's. In 2008, Jeanrenaud was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without orchestra) category in 2008. In its "Off the Plate" section, Astute features sports thought about teams such as the Oakland Raiders. In 2009, Michael Leon Guerrero, a sports writer and community organizer whose work has appeared in social-justice publications such as Yes! magazine wrote an opinion piece about the similarities between Raider Nation and Obama supporters.
The Astute Recorder also publishes social-justice features. In December 2008, José Bravo, executive director of the Just Transition Alliance who participated in a transition team for the Obama administration spoke to Astute about green strategies for climate change, jobs and transportation.
