The Abbott Family (The Young and the Restless)

The Abbott family is one of the central families on the CBS Daytime Soap Opera: The Young and The Restless. They are an upper class family living in the fictional version of Genoa City, Wisconson. They were led by Patriarch business tycoon John Abbott. Currently, the main leader of the family is his son Jack Abbott

First Generation

John Abbott, Sr.

  • Portrayed by Jerry Douglas since 1980 until 2006. Since then as a ghost

John Abbott came to Genoa City with his son Jack Abbott and daughters Ashley Abbott and Traci Abbott. He is the founder of international cosmetics company Jabot. During the course of his time on the show he had two marriages with Jill Foster, as well as a number of other romances and marriages. By the time of his death in 2006, he was married to Gloria Abbott. As a result of his second marriage to Jill, he had another son Billy Abbott.

Professionally, he led Jabot for decades against threats and attacks by his ex-wife Dina Abbott Mergeron and Victor Newman. Over the years, he mentored his children Jack and Ashley to take over the company. He was also a close friend of business leader Katherine Chancellor.

Dina Abbott Mergeron

  • Portrayed by Marla Adams from 1983 through 1986, and has appeared occasionally since then.

Dina Mergeron was the ex-wife of John Abbott and mother of Jack Abbott, Ashley Abbott, and Traci Abbott Connolly. By 1983, years after their divorce, Dina came back as John was now married to Jill Foster. Jill attempted to destroy any connection to Dina in the Abbott Mansion and make Dina forget AbOUT Dina. On the business front, who now owned Mergeron Cosmetics, attempted to buy John's company Jabot. Although her identity was originally a secret, her secret was soon uncovered. In addition, the secret that Ashley Abbott's father was actually Brent Davis, not John Abbott was uncovered. However, very few people now of this secret, including John. Since then, Dina has been around for her children and has appeared at occasional Abbott family events.

Jill Foster Abbott

  • Portrayed by Brenda Dickson from 1973 to 1980, 1983-1987, BOND Gideon 1980, Deborah Adair from 1980 to 1983, 1986, and currently Jess Walton since 1987.

Jill Fenmore who early on gained a reputation as a gold-digger through her marriages to Phillip Chancellor II and Stuart Brooks, married John Abbott in 1982. Through her marriage, she quickly climbed the business ladder at Jabot Cosmetics, but continued an earlier affair with John's son Jack Abbott. By 1986, Jill and John divorced after her shooting.

In 1993, John and Jill remarried and produced a son, Billy Abbott, who's father was originally believed to be Victor Newman. However, Jill had another affair in the marriage and they divorced by 1996. Despite their divorces, John and Jill remained close. Currently, Jill discovered that she is actually Lauren Fenmore Baldwin's paternal half-sister and changes her name to "Jill Fenmore Abbott". Shortly after, Jill married Australian businessman Colin Atkinson, who is actually the father of Cane Ashby, who was once believed to be Jill's son. In reality, he schemed with Jill's son Phillip Chancellor III years ago to replace him in Genoa City and Phillip who move to Australia. Their scheme was later uncovered. Now, Colin had intended on stealing Cane's children away, and Jill ended up learning the truth about Colin and Cane's fake death earlier in the year.

Gloria Abbott Bardwell

  • Portrayed by Joan Van Ark from 2004 to 2005, and Judith Chapman since 2005.

Gloria Abbott Bardwell comes to Genoa City in 2003 with her son Kevin Fisher. After John Abbott saved Kevin's life, Gloria and John became close and married in 2004. However, her ex-husband Tom Fisher came to town claiming that their marriage was never properly ended, thus her marriage to John was invalid. Tom eventually blackmails her into her helping him have a romance with her step-daughter Ashley Abbott. When John found out, he killed Tom. While in prison, Gloria stayed at the Abbott Mansion and had to fight off attacks from Jack and Ashley Abbott who greatly disliked her. By 2006, while in prison, John suffers a major stroke and dies making Gloria his WIDOW because of marriage in 2005. However, after his death, Jack and Ashley continued to fight Gloria over his will and the fight remained in contention through 2008.

Second Generation

Jack Abbott

  • Portrayed by Terry Lester from 1980 through 1989, and sine been played by Peter Bergman.

John "Jack" Abbott, Jr. is the eldest son of John Abbott and Dina Mergeron. He served in the Vietnam War where he ended up fathering a son. By 1980, he along with his family moved to Genoa City. Jack began working at the family owned, Jabot Cosmetics and quickly became a key executive in the company. Soon after, he began his decades long business rivalry with Newman Enterprises CEO Victor Newman. Currently, Jack is no longer working for Jabot Cosmetics, but his sister Ashley Abbott is, as Jabot is now owned by Tucker McCall as a part of McCall Unlimited.

Jack has also been well known for his romances over the years. When his father was married to Jill Foster, he had an affair with her while he was also married to Patty Williams and maintaining another romance with Diane Jenkins. In the early 1990's, he married Victor's ex-wife Nikki Newman, but that marriage ended up in divorce. After over 20 years, Jack reconnected with his Vietnam War romance, Luan Volien. However, she ended up dying shortly after they married. Since then, he has been involved in a marriage to Phyllis Summers and Nicholas Newman's ex-wife Sharon Newman.

Ashley Abbott

  • Currently Portrayed by Eileen Davidson. She has portrayed her from 1982 to 1988, 1999 to 2007, and has since 2009
  • Has also been portrayed by Brenda Epperson from 1988 to 1995, and Shari Shattuck from 1996 through 1999.

Ashley Abbott is the eldest daughter of John Abbott and Dina Mergeron, or at least we thought. It was quickly discovered that Ashley's real father was Brent Davis, not John Abbott. However, very few people know the truth including John. After learning the truth, she disappeared only to be found by Abbott family rival Victor Newman. Ashley and Victor began a serious affair which ultimately led to the destruction of Victor's marriage to Nikki Newman. However, before then, Ashley became pregnant, but aborted it when Nikki was diagnosed with cancer and Victor stayed with her for another year. Their marriage ended shortly after and Victor and Ashley ended up marrying. However, only after a few years they too divorced. Years later, Ashley wound up with Victor's sperm after Nikki Newman performed a switch in the lab when Diane Jenkins had conspired to get Victor's sperm. However, Ashley didn't tell anyone including her then husband Brad Carlton until a few years later when she was diagnosed with cancer. In 2009, Ashley and Victor remarried, but his son Adam Newman put together a series of schemes most notably being a baby switch of Sharon Newman's daughter to Ashley, after she thought she had suffered a miscarriage. Eventually, his scheme was uncovered, but when Victor was shot, Nikki and he reconnected. Ashley and Victor divorced in 2010. Currently, is planning on marrying businessman Tucker McCall, but is facing great resistance from her daughter Abby Newman. Abby ended up put together a scheme which ended up causing a car accident leaving Tucker seriously injured.

Over the years, Ashley has also developed into a leading female executive at Jabot Cosmetics. She has also help positions at Newman Enterprises. Ashley is currently the CEO of Jabot, which is a subsidiary of McCall Unlimited.

Traci Abbott Connolly

  • Portrayed by Beth Maitland since 1982.

Traci Abbott Connolly is the youngest child of John Abbott and Dina Mergeron. She was introduced as constantly being jealous of her older sister Ashley, and that led to a diet pills addiction early on. Whenever she had problems she would turn to her father or her brother Jack. By the mid 1980's, she fought over Danny Romalotti with Lauren Fenmore. Traci ended up marrying Danny in 1984, only to have the marriage be annulled shortly after. By 1986, she married Brad Carlton, but the marrriage landed in divorce by 1989. However, their romance resurfaced in the early 1990's and they remarried after she gave birth to Colleen Carlton. However, her new book editor Steve Connolly stole Traci's heart and they moved to New York together and took Colleen. Today, she and Steven live in New York City where she works as a novelist. Traci returns to Genoa City to visit her family often and returned when her daughter died in October 2009. She made the difficult decision to take her off life and then donate her heart to a dying Victor Newman, who recovered shortly thereafter.

Billy Abbott

  • Portrayed by David Tom from 1999 to 2002, Ryan Brown from 2002 to 2003, and by Scott Seymour in 2006.
  • Currently Portrayed by Billy Miller since 2008, however, he plans on leaving the show in the summer of 2011.

William Foster "Billy" Abbott is the son of John Abbott and Jill Foster Abbott. He was born in 1993, but after Jill's second divorce from John, Billy moved to New York City with John. By 1999, Billy returns as a teenager as begins a romantic relationship with Mackenzie Browning. It is soon discovered that Mackenzie is Katherine Chancellor's granddaughter, which angers Jill. By 2003, Billy and Mackenzie decided to marry, but Jill tries to stop the wedding when she learns that she is Katherine's daughter, thus Billy and Mackenzie are cousins. The marriage was annulled after the news came out and they both leave Genoa City. By 2006, Billy returns and develops a gambling addition. By 2008, Billy returns again and gets involved in a romance with Chloe Mitchell, who ends up romancing Billy's brother Cane Ashby. Billy fathers Chloe's child, but a pregnant Chloe and Cane marry, as Billy gets romantically involved with Cane's former romance Lily Winters. Cane and Billy end up fighting over the custody rights of Cordelia, Chloe's child, but Cane and Chloe divorce, and Billy and Lily end up breaking up. Shortly thereafter, it is discovered that Jill is not Katherine's daughter, thus Billy and Cane aren't brothers, and Billy and Mackenzie aren't cousins. Billy and Chloe end up marrying just as Mackenzie returns. Chloe and Billy end up divorcing and he and Mackenzie resume their romance. Over the years, Billy has also had romances with his brother's wife Sharon Abbott and Paul Williams' daughter Heather Stevens. Billy has also become a major businessman in Genoa City as owner, editor, and CEO of Restless Style Magazine.

By 2010, Billy and Victoria Newman become romantically involved much to their family's anger. While in Jamaica, Billy and Victoria get drunk and marry, but the marriage was declared invalid. When they return, various Newman and Abbott family members encourage them to stay apart, but by September, they marry properly. A pregnant Victoria ends up miscarrying, but by after attempts at getting pregnant again, Billy buys a child of the black market and he and Victoria illegally adopt her. Currently, the truth about the child being Daniel Romalotti and Daisy Carter's child comes out, and after Chloe Mitchell files a custody suit for Cordelia, Lucy is taken away from Billy and Victoria.

Brad Carlton

  • Portrayed by Don Diamont from 1985 to 1996, and again from 1998 to 2009.

Brad Carlton was originally the Abbott family's pool boy, but caught the eye of younger Abbott daughter Traci. They married in 1986 and his new father-in-law, but throughout their marriage, Brad had feelings from Traci's older sister Ashley. Traci and Brad divorced in 1989, only to reunite in 1991. During their short one-year marriage,[John Abbott (The Young and the Restless)|John Abbott]] gave him a major executive position at Jabot Cosmetics. Traci and Brad divorced in 1989. By the early 1990's, Traci and Ashley fought over Brad, but after Traci gave birth to Colleen Carlton in 1992, Traci and Brad remarried. Shorty thereafter however, Traci's new editor Steven Connolly fell for Traci and he and Traci ended up leaving town together and taking Colleen. With Brad divorced from Traci again, he had another relationship with Lauren Fenmore and later with Nikki Abbott. He also romanced Olivia Winters, Jill Foster Abbott, and Diane Jenkins. Eventually, in 2000, Brad and Ashley married and he adopted Ashley's daughter Abby Carlton. However, Brad later learned that Abby's real father was Victor Newman much to his anger. During his short marriage to Victoria Newman, Victor ended up having a background check into Brad and it was discovered that his real name was George Kaplan. He changed his name to protect himself after people had killed his family. Brad ended up dying after saving his romance, Sharon Newman's son Noah Newman from a frozen pond. Over the years, Brad became a major executive at Jabot as well as Newman Enterprises.

Phyllis Summers Abbott

  • Portrayed by Michelle Stafford from 1994 to 1997, and currently has been played her since 2000.
  • From 1997 through 1999, she was portrayed by Sandra Nelson.

Phyllis Summers Newman originally married singer Danny Romalotti in 1994 and had a son Daniel Romalotti Jr. They divorced in 1996, but remarried for a year in 1997. In 1999, Phyllis, was working for Victor Newman, tried to spy on Jack Abbott and Brad Carlton, but she ended up seducing Jack. When Jack learned the truth, their affair ended. In 2001, Jack and Phyllis reunited and married the day after Christmas. However, their marriage was threatened early on when his former romance Diane Jenkins returned and explained that her son Kyle Jenkins is actually his son. Diane moved back into the Abbott Mansion and tried to win Jack back by scheming against Phyllis, including framing her for arson. Eventually, a long custody battle began with Jack winning. However, Jack ended up giving Kyle back to Diane. A couple of years later, Phyllis had an affair with Nicholas Newman. After a series of business conflicts and affairs, Jack and Phyllis divorced. Phyllis ended up marrying Nick and Jack married Nick's ex-wife Sharon Newman. Their marriages were all on the skids by 2009. In late 2010, Jack and Phyllis reunited, but by April 2011, Phyllis had another affair with Nick and their romance was over.

Victoria Newman Abbott

  • Originated by Heather Tom in 1990 and played her from 1990-1997 and again from 1997-2003
  • Sarah Aldrich took the role for a stint in 1997
  • Been played by veteran soap star Amelia Heinle since 2005

Victora Newman Abbott is the daughter of Abbott family rival Victor Newman and his first wife (Jack's ex wife) Nikki Newman. Victora is also the sister to Ashley's daughter Abby Newman. She has been to ex husbands of both Ashley and Traci. She married Cole Howard in 1994 before he left her for Ashley and than she married Traci's two time ex husband and father to the new deaceased Colleen and Ashley's one time ex Brad Carlton they divorced after a yea. She married a man named J.T. Hellstrom (played by Victoria's real life husband Thad Luckinbill) when she found out she was pregnant with his child. They divorced. She had an invalid marriage to Billy in 2010 but they fell in love and married in September 2010 but J.T. took his and Victoria's son Reed Hellstrom to Washington D.C. when his fiance and wife Mackenzie Browning got a job there. She and Billy got pregnant but had a miscarriage. Billy adopted a baby they later name Lucy Abbott. Victoria found out about Billy buying Lucy on the black market. When Chloe Mitchell filed for full custody of her and Billy's child Delia Abbott CPS took Lucy from Billy and Victoria. To make it worse Victoria s ex sister-in-law Phyllis Summers Newman is fighting for tempoary custody of Lucy due to her being the daughter of Phyllis's son Daniel Romalotti. Through all the tough crap Billy and Victoria have a wonderul marriage.

Third Generation

Keemo Volien Abbott

  • Portrayed by Phillip Moon from 1994 to 1996.

Keemo Volien Abbott is the son of Jack Abbott and Luan Volien. He is found living in the jungles of Vietnam by Christine Blair and Paul Williams when they went to Hong Kong to locate him to bring him to his mother Luan Volien who had been shot by robbers at her restaurant in Genoa City.

Upon Keemo's arrival in Genoa City, Keemo resents his parents for abandoning him, but he eventually forms a relationship with them. Keemo developed feelings for Christine Blair, who let him down easy by telling him she wanted be friends, but nothing romantic. Keemo later became romantically involved with Mari Jo Mason, but he tires of Mari Jo's mind-games and ends the relationship after she pays a prostitute to sleep with him. After his mother, Luan, dies from a terminal illness, Keemo leaves Genoa City along with his sister Mai.

Colleen Carlton

  • Portrayed by Lyndsy Fonseca from 2001 to 2005, Adrianne León from 2006 to 2007, and finally by Tammin Sursok from 2007 to 2009.

Collen Carlton was the daughter of Traci Abbott Connolly and Brad Carlton. After growing up in New York City with Traci and her step-father Steven Connolly, she moved to be with her grandfather John Abbott in 2001. Early on, she develops a romantic relationship with JT Hellstrom. She later was kidnapped by Kevin Fisher after telling Neil Winters about his [...] relationship with Neil's daughter Lily Winters. She was saved by JT, but leaves shortly thereafter. She later returned hoping to be with JT, but found him now with Mackenzie Browning. Regardless, JT and Colleen later reunite. Colleen and Kevin were later kidnapped by Jana Hawkes, but JT saved them. Colleen and Kevin forgave each other afterwards and JT and Colleen broke up again. After her father dies in 2009, she took his seat on the Board of the Newman Enterprises where she attacked Victor Newman. Much to Victor's anger, Colleen began an affair with JT, who was now married to Victoria Newman. Soon after, Colleen was kidnapped by her uncle's ex-wife Patty Williams. After she escaped, she nearly drowned after her canoe flipped. At the hospital, she was declared dead and her mother made the difficult decision to donate her heart to Victor, who had been shot by Patty.

Abby Newman

  • Portrayed by Darcy Rose Byrnes from 2003 to 2008 and Hayley Erin from 2008 to 2010.
  • Currently Portrayed by Marcy Rylan since 2010.

Abigail "Abby" Rachel Newman is the daughter of Victor Newman and Ashley Abbott. She grew up believing her father was Brad Carlton. At the age of five she found a video of Ashley that revealed Victor was her father and Abby confessed this to him.

Kyle Jenkins Abbott

  • Portrayed by Garrett Ryan Ewald since 2010.

Kyle Jenkins Abbott is originally thought to be the child of Victor Newman and Diane Jenkins, but once the truth comes out that he is Jack Abbott's son, a custody battle over him ensues. Jack is granted visitation, but immediately questions Diane's motives as she is planning on winning Jack back from his marriage to Phyllis Summers. Diane sets up a plan to accuse Phyllis of arson and attempted [...] by setting the Abbott pool house ablaze. Phyllis convinces Jack that Diane set her up so that she could have him, and they resolve to expose Diane - to such lengths that Jack takes Diane to bed and seduces her into a confession. Phyllis is acquitted, then finds the note that Diane had written to pay a bum to call Phyllis away from the wedding. Jack and Phyllis use this as blackmail to get Diane to turn over custody of Kyle. Diane then uses her Newman millions to help bail out financially strapped Jabot Cosmetics with "no strings attached" and set up offices at Jabot. Due to the friction caused by Jack working for Jabot and Phyllis working for Newman, Jack eventually gives his son Kyle back to Diane. After a failed flirtation with Damon Porter, Diane leaves town with Kyle and moves to Chicago.

In late 2010, Kyle and Diane return permanently and Kyle begins to reconnect with Jack. Kyle also has been firm in dislike for Jack's then romance Phyllis Summers. Currently Kyle lives at the Abbott Mansion following the annulment of Diane's remarriage to Victor Newman.

Cordelia Abbott

  • Portrayed currently by Alix and Madeline Dubois since 2010.

Cordelia Abbott was originally believed to be father by Cane Ashby and Chloe Mitchell. However, in reality, Chloe had been tricking Cane into believing that when the real father was Billy Abbott, who was at that time believed to be Cane's brother. The truth about Delia's paternity is revealed soon after her birth, though even after the reveal, Cane still considers himself Delia's father and plans to sue Chloe and Billy for full custody. He drops the suit after Lily Winters talks him out of it, saying Delia needs to be with her mother. Once the truth about Cane's story came to light, he reveals to Billy and Chloe that by using Phillip's blood for the DNA test, he knew all along that Billy is Delia's father.

Jana Hawkes kidnapped along her with Lucy Abbott after finding the truth about the truth about Lucy's paternity in delirious hopes to be an family with her ex husband, Kevin Fisher. She was let go along with Lucy Abbott in a nearby church, where Kevin had persuaded Jana to leave the kids. They are later discovered in the church by Katherine Chancellor Murphy and her husband Murphy.

Lucy Abbott

  • Portrayed by Monte.James,Vivana (unknown last names)

Lucy Abbott is the biological daughter of Daniel Romalotti and Daisy Carter and the adoptive daughter of Billy and Victoria Abbott. She is born in January 2011 when Daisy went into labor in Jana Hawkes's car while trying to escape Genoa City. Billy bought Lucy on the black market from Primrose DeVille the niece of Rose DeVille the person who stole their friend Nina Webster's baby boy many years ago. Victoria has tried to raise Lucy away from her grandfather, Victor Newman, but Nikki has pressured Victor into being there for the family.

Recently, Jana Hawkes uncovered the truth regarding Lucy and since Daniel Romalotti and Billy have been forced to come clean. As a result of a custody suit filed by Chloe Mitchell, Billy's ex-wife, Lucy was taken away from Billy and Victoria until more investigating is done regarding Lucy. Phyllis Summers has been open regarding her intent to have custody of Lucy, or at least visitation rights.

Places

Abbott Mansion

The Abbott Mansion was the former home of John Abbott and Dina Mergeron. In 1980, John and his children Jack, Ashley, and Traci moved back to Genoa City. Mamie Johnson had been the Abbott's long-time maid, and always proved to be a thorn in John Abbott's wife Jill. At one point, Diane Jenkins had burned down the Abbott pool house in order to attack Phyllis Abbott's marriage to Jack.

By the time John Abbott died in 2005, ownership of the house was up for debate between Jack and Ashley Abbott and John's widow, Gloria Abbott. Apparently before John died, Jack tricked John into leaving Gloria nothing. Eventually the true will of John Abbott came out, and Gloria was awarded half of the Abbott Estate. After a number of schemes, Jack and his wife Sharon Abbott moved out to leave Gloria and her husband Jeffrey Bardwell with the house. Gloria and Jack ended up agreeing to move into the Abbott pool house, and Jack moved back in.
