Content
"That's God" is a piano ballad, with strings and percussion. The song's female narrator describes all the beauties of the world she has seen in her life, drawing the conclusion that everywhere she looks, she can say "That's God":
- ''If you take the time to look around
- ''You'll see it everywhere
- ''It's right here all around us
- ''Even when we're not aware
- ''It doesn't have to be a miracle
- ''It might just be the little things
- ''And even those who say they don't believe
- ''They may not know it, but every day they see
- That's god
Messina began debuting the single in late 2009 on her Music Room Series Tour. "My heart is exploding with excitement. This song is truly what I want to say. I believe in it and its message." Having had her first child in January 2009, Messina was inspired to write the song while spending time with her son on a trip to Jasper, Canada, where she saw mountains with glacier lakes.
Reception
Sam Gazdziak of The 9513 gave the song a thumbs down, referring to it as a clone of Lee Ann Womack's "There Is a God." He described the song as a "pandering attempt to court the Christian country music demographic with a simplistic song that isn’t close to Messina’s best vocals."
