TextID

TextID is a service based on SMS text messaging that allows the user to set-up an auto-response whenever their "keyword" is sent to 555411 via text. The auto-response is limited to 136 characters but can include a link that takes the viewer to specially formatted mobile web page which can contain up to 21 MB of images and 20,000 characters of text.

History

Created in 2008, TextID was started by Michael Halvorson in Phoenix, AZ. Originally, the idea behind TextID was to replace business cards with the transfer of that contact information taking place instead via text. Rather than handing someone your business card, you could simply have them text your name to 555411 and they would then get an immediate auto-response containing your contact information. However, TextID now has a lot more potential that just replacing business cards. It can help eliminate the need for printed brochures, press packs, and other materials normally handed out to clients, instead sending them a URL for a virtual copy. TextID licensed the number 555411 in the U.S. and Canada from the Common Short Code Administration, the group responsible for assigning the five and six-digit codes used to send and receive text messages.
