Technex is the annual technical festival of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. The festival hosts a variety of events targeting the improvement in technical and innovative thinking of the students. Various competitions for students to test out their wits, lectures which nourish the young minds with knowledge and experience of intellectual and experienced guests, and workshops to learn and improve skills are part of this prestigious technical festival of IT-BHU.

Events

  • Modex: Modex deals with all the model making and project design type of events. The events that come under Modex are:
    • Open Hardware: In open hardware, the objective is to create a hardware working design of any innovative idea.
    • Simulation Projects: In this event, student teams from their respective colleges are supposed to present a simulated project. Simulation softwares such as Ansys, Abacus, ProE etc can be used for the simulations.
    • Green Technology: Projects based on alternate sources of energy such as hydrogen fuel cells, solar cells, and even new innovative projects are encouraged to be presented in this event.
    • Social and Rural Projects: This event provides a platform for presenting projects and designs for the development of society and more specifically the rural India.
    • Healthcare: This event includes projects related to health issues such as portable ECG, low cost hearing aid, knee joint replacement etc.
  • Robo-Opus: Robo-Opus'11 is an initiative by Robosapiens India in association with Technex'11 IT-BHU towards Robotics. It’s a National level Robotics Championship. The prelims Rounds will be organized at different Zonal centers all across India. Robo Opus will now reach to other engineering colleges and all across India by holding 25 Zonal centers for organizing the prelims round of it. Zonal Winner of Robo Opus will Participate in the final Round of Robo-Opus 2011 at IT-BHU during Technex'11 on 3 -6 March’11.
  • Robotrix: Robotrix deals with all the events based on robotics and automation.
    • Dash n Trounce: This event puts the bots of the participating teams to a test on different arenas.
    • Optika: In this event the bots of the participating teams need to recognize the coloured blocks placed randomly on an arena, and place them in the respective blocks where they belong. A overhead webcam is provided. The webcam provides images. Image processing is required for the bots to take action to complete the task.
    • I-Robot: Line following autonomous bots are to be employed in this event to perform a given task.
    • Robowars: In this event the robots of different teams battle it out for their survival and existence inside the arena.

Guest Lectures

  • J V Narlikar]] is a proponent of the steady state cosmology. He developed with Sir Fred Hoyle the conformal gravity theory, commonly known as Hoyle-Narlikar theory. It synthesizes Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity and Mach's Principle. Narlikar has received several national and international awards and honorary doctorates. India's second highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan, was awarded to him in 2004 for his research work. Prior to this, in 1965, he was conferred Padma Bhushan. He is a recipient of Bhatnagar Award, M.P. Birla Award, and the Prix Janssen of the French Astronomical Society. He is an Associate of the Royal Astronomical Society of London, and a Fellow of the three Indian National Science Academies and the Third World Academy of Sciences.
  • Dr. Lakshman Tamil (University of Texas at Dallas) will be organizing a workshop on engineered healthcare systems for the elderly. He is a visionary engineer, a thorough planner, and a tenacious manager. He conceives of a useful futuristic device or system, analyzes its chief characteristics, organizes the steps needed to manufacture the product, assembles a team of collaborators, and then implements the plans. He has industrial, academic, and entrepreneurial experiences.
  • Dr. [[Lalji Singh]] is the former director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), located in Hyderabad, India. He is a respected and widely acclaimed Molecular Biologist in India. His areas of his research interest involves molecular basis of [...] determination, DNA fingerprinting, wildlife conservation, silkworm genome analysis, human genome and ancient DNA studies. Dr Singh and his colleagues in the CCMB, at Hyderabad, developed a probe called Bkm-derived probe for DNA fingerprinting. This fetched him and his group the CSIR Technology Award for the year 1992 for biological sciences. In 1998 he was appointed the Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad. At present, Dr Lalji Singh is the Bhatnagar Fellow (CSIR) at CCMB, Hyderabad since August 2009.
  • Dr. Prem Chand Pandey is an Indian scientist and academic in the fields of Satellite Oceanography, Remote Sensing, Atmospheric Science, Antarctic and Climate Change. He worked on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite and SEASAT programs. During 1997-2005, he was the founding director of the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Goa. He also founded the K. Banerjee Centre of Ocean and Atmosphere Studies (KBCAOS) in Allahabad University. Certificate of Recognition and Cash Award-1985 by NASA. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology Award in Earth Sciences (1989) given by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for outstanding scientific contributions.
  • Dr. Rajendra Singh (Clemson University) will be organizing a workshop on Photovoltaic cells. Prof. Singh was recently named a Champion of Photovoltaics by the magazine Photovolatics World. With proven successes in operations, project leadership, R&D, product/process commercialization, and start-ups, Dr. Singh has been a leading photovoltaic expert for over 30 years. His fundamental and comprehensive research on rapid thermal processing technology for manufacturing solar cells is now valued annually at $1B pa. His early work on ultra-thin gate oxide and conducting oxide semiconductors led to their use in all kind of commercial thin film solar cells.
  • Dr. [[Yash Pal]] is an Indian scientist and educator. Yash Pal is known for regular appearances on the science programme Turning Point telecast on Doordarshan and for explaining scientific concepts in layman's language along with participation on advisory boards for televised science programmes such as Bharat ki chaap. In 1976 the Indian government awarded Dr. Pal the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to science and space technology. Pal was made a Marconi Fellow in 1980 for his work at the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad.
