Founding Fathers

Tau Psi Omega Fraternity was founded on the campus of Arizona State University in the Fall of 1996 by twelve Founding Fathers. They are:

  • William Ahumada
  • Roman Alvarez
  • Orlando Carreon
  • Timothy DeSoto
  • Alfredo Gonzalez
  • Christopher Gonzales
  • Mark Anthony Lopez
  • Steven Perales
  • Rudy Pino
  • Jaime Reyes
  • Keith Sedgely
  • Marcos D. Voss

As these twelve young men started their respective university lives, they were surrounded by a multitude of opportunities and new experiences. Most of them were not originally from the area, and in their pursuit of leadership and education they became involved in various organizations on campus. It was through their involvement, that the lives of these individuals crossed each other. As they began to share their new experiences together, a strong friendship grew between these men, and in their desire to strengthen that bond and in search for "a home, away from home" they looked at the fraternities that existed on campus. After exhausting research and careful consideration, they decided that a new fraternity would better fulfill their needs.

Keeping their values in mind, they founded a community service and academic based brotherhood. A fraternity that would give other young men the opportunity to bring the values, strengths, and passions present in their families and cultures into a brotherhood, to grow into leaders, and to positively reach out and impact their local communities. A fraternity that did not pride itself on the number of their membership, but in the quality of each of its brothers. A brotherhood of sincere and respectful gentlemen. A diverse brotherhood where young men could have the opportunity for social integration and leadership development, while achieving academic success. A brotherhood that would promote and instill the values of honor, unity, diversity, servitude, faith, and knowledge. Since its foundation, Tau Psi Omega has made an active commitment in the area of service, and has been successful in building positive relationships with our local communities and other organizations on campus, and implementing new service projects. Today, the brothers of Tau Psi Omega continue to strive in accomplishing the purpose and goals and Mission Statement that the twelve founding fathers set forth.

Mission statement

Recognizing the importance of a close family structure, Tau Psi Omega seeks to implement this structure into our fraternity as well as the community. As a community service based fraternity, it is our goal to bring our community together by using the family values present within our brotherhood. Within Tau Psi Omega Fraternity, we seek to reflect the rich cultural diversity that is present in the world we live in today. It is with this in mind that Tau Psi Omega actively pursues brothers of all races and backgrounds in an attempt to better understand our own cultures as well as the cultures that others could bring to our collective table.Keeping these goals in mind, Tau Psi Omega will continue to pursue these dreams as well as new dreams that will come with a new century of honor and service to our community.

Diversity

Tau Psi Omega emphasizes the importance of both understanding and celebrating all cultures. It is their belief that the commonalties they share as people are further enriched by the unique customs that are present in the cultures that surround them. As a predominantly-Hispanic founded fraternity, the twelve founding fathers recognized that their community consisted of people of many cultures; it is with this in mind that they created a fraternity that was not limited to serving one culture, but a fraternity that served all people. The fraternity consists of brothers who identify with various cultures, ethnicities, and nationalities, including, American, Anglo, Chinese, Ecuadorian, German, Irish, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Tau Psi Omega appreciates and celebrates the diversity that each brother brings in the form of culture, ethnicity, language, nationality, or personality to our brotherhood. Each year, Tau Psi Omega hosts a workshop on an issue on diversity that is open to students on campus and individuals from the community. Tau Psi Omega's Mission Statement states that "we seek to reflect the rich cultural diversity that is present in the world", which is why Tau Psi Omega "actively pursues brothers of all races and backgrounds, in order "to better understand our own culture as well as the cultures that others could bring to our collective table."

Academics

Since its foundation, Tau Psi Omega Fraternity has actively worked to ensure the graduation of each of their brothers. Tau Psi Omega supports the academic success of their brothers by providing financial assistant for any professional tutoring needed outside of the classroom and through additional resources. All active brothers are required to complete a specific number of study hours and instructor visitations per semester. Brothers are encouraged to study together at one of the university's libraries or any other conducive environment for studying. All brothers must achieve at least a 2.5 grade point average each semester to maintain active status. In order to achieve Alumni status, all brothers must attain at least a Bachelor degree. In addition, the pursuit of educational advancement beyond a Bachelors is strongly encouraged to all of our brothers. Brothers regularly attend workshops and guest lectures on programs that extend beyond a Bachelor degree. It is the belief of Tau Psi Omega that knowledge is essential to the development of leadership skills and personal growth.
