Symposium – Towards a Low Carbon Transport System
Symposium – Towards a Low Carbon Transport System (STL) is an international symposium on low-carbon transport systems, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on December 5, 2009. It’s a pre-event to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, organised by the Institution for Transport Policy Studies (ITPS).
The aim of the symposium is to explore what must be done in order to achieve the global goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 50 % by the year 2050.
The keynote speaker is Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Director-General of India’s The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). In 2007 the IPCC received the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts in conveying knowledge of man-made climate change and laying the foundation for the measures needed to counteract such change.
During the symposium, a global scenario on the impact of reducing CO2 emissions will be introduced, followed by a panel discussion where policy recommendations to achieve the crucial transport target will be discussed. Attention will be focused on financial support, technology transfer and the decoupling between economy and traffic demand.
Other speakers include Takamitsu Sawa, Professor, Graduate School of Policy Science at Japan’s Ritsumeikan University and Dr. Lewis Fulton, Senior Transport Energy Specialist at the Energy Technology Policy Division of the International Energy Agency.
The symposium is based on a study by the Institution for Transport Policy Studies and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. The study analyses global and regional scenarios up to 2050 on how to reduce CO2 emissions as much as 50 % compared to 2000 through back-casting approach. Both the symposium and the study are sponsored by the Nippon Foundation.
The event will take place at the SAS Royal Hotel on Hammerichsgade 1 in Copenhagen.
