Space Sector
The company came into limelight after the surprising launch of its own satellite - SupremeSAT-1. Using the Indo-China Geo Political advantage, The company formed a partnership with the Chinese government and pulled through the surprise launch in record time. On November 27.2012, SupremeSAT-1 was successfully launched from Xi-Chang, China triggering large scale accusations and doubts within Sri Lanka and globally.
There was widespread criticism that the company used state funds for the launch. Something which was totally denied by the group so far. People believed that mainly political manipulations were the reason behind the success. The opposition parties and the leader of opposition himself raised the issue of the satellite business of Supreme in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. Most of these were due to the company employing the youngest son of the President of Sri Lanka - Rohitha Rajapaksa, an astronaut aspirant as the company's Chief Technical Director.
However, The company and its owner, Sri Lankan millionaire R.M.Manivannan stood firm and strong and sent further shock waves by signing a USD 215 Million "Design, Manufacture, Launch Contract" for SupremeSAT-2 within months after the first launch. The signing ceremony was attended by both Sri Lankan and The Chinese heads of state demonstrating the strong backing both governments were offering to the Space Venture for unknown reasons.
Mining & Trading
Supreme Solutions of the Group was seen to be actively involved in mining and trading of minerals. That too is not without controversy. R.M.Manivannan was accused of securing the supply of coal to the Sri Lankan government without any tender process and has supplied more than half of Sri Lanka's coal requirements from his Indonesian coal mines.
Supreme Solutions has now gone global in the mining sector and has secured valuable coal and iron ore mines in Indonesia, Madagascar and Mongolia.
Again the Chinese government came in for the support of Supreme by signing an MOU with the company in Kandy, Sri Lanka offering an open ended mandate to the company to "Enhance the mineral reserves of the government of China, Overseas". The Chinese government formed a special company for this purpose as a subsidiary of China Space Ministry - "Beijing Aerospace Great wall Minerals Investment Corporation". Supreme's success in the mining sector too was linked to the strong financial backing of the emerging Chinese economy. critics say.
