Starship Amazing
Starship Amazing are a synthpop duo consisting of Derek Alexander and Calvin Hansen from Anchorage, Alaska. They started making music in 2008 with their EP, Zoom Zoom Internet. The duo came to prominence with their sixth full-length album Ruby Dagger, released in 2013. The band's latest release was the EP 20Xx in 2015. Since then, the group has been in hiatus, with both members working on solo projects. After seven years of making music, the duo has released six albums, six EPs, two singles, two compilations, and a B-Side collection. On March 15, 2016, all of Starship Amazing's albums were made free on their Bandcamp page.
While initially a chiptune act, the duo started moving towards a more synthpop sound with their 2010 album Scoops the Robot, which also was the first album in the "Robot Trilogy," along with the industrial An Apocalypse in Binary: The Memoirs of Gearhart Deckrion and the B-Side collection Broken Robots. Starting with these albums, the duo began incorporating strings, pianos, synthetic voices, and more traditional synthpop tropes to their sound, along with some elements of hip-hop and dance music. Despite this, they never did move away from chiptunes entirely, as seen with songs like "Cyberfreak Burnout" from Ruby Dagger and "Love, The Elephant" from Y'all Stop Bloggin'.
