Participants dressed as Smurfs during a world record attempt in Hull. Smurf gathering events take place in various countries, where many people dress up as Smurfs, the blue characters from the comic series created by Belgian artist Peyo.

List of Events

  • In 2009, Swansea, Wales, hosted a Smurf gathering organized by Swansea University and Britain’s costume seller Jokers’ Masquerade. Over 2,510 participants, mostly students, dressed as Smurfs, surpassing the previous Guinness World Record of 1,253 set in Castleblayney, Ireland. Participants painted themselves blue and wore white costumes, with Jokers’ Masquerade providing 3,500 blue gnome costumes. A Guinness World Records official confirmed the event as the largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs at that time. The event ended with a gathering at Swansea nightclub Oceana on June 9, 2009.
  • On 17 May 2025, Landerneau in Brittany, western France, set a new record for the largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs, with 3,076 participants. The event surpassed the previous record of 2,762, set in Lauchringen, Germany, in 2019. The 2025 event was organised by the association Pays de Landerneau-Daoulas, with support from Paramount Pictures France and the Peyo Company.

Later Gatherings

Croatia

  • In January 2008, a Smurf-themed gathering was organized in Croatia, where approximately 395 participants dressed as Smurfs. The organizers, who believed the standing record was 291 participants based on information from a Croatian edition of the Guinness Book of Records, organized the event but failed to break the actual record, which had already been surpassed in 2007 by 451 students at Warwick University in the United Kingdom.

Germany

  • In February 2016, a local group, Dä Traditionsverein anno 2004, organized a Smurf gathering in Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany, which drew approximately 2,149 participants. However, the attempt was unsuccessful in breaking the existing Guinness World Record of 2,510 participants set in Swansea, Wales, in 2009.
