SMS Württemberg (1918)

SMS Württemberg (1918) was a Bayern class battleship launched for the German Imperial Navy during World War I but never completed.

The ship was the last of its class and in fact the last battleship to be launched by Germany before its defeat and the end of World War I. It was the second vessel of the Imperial Navy to be named after the Grand Duchy of Württemberg, one of the states of Imperial Germany.

History

Württemberg was ordered as one of two ships of the Bayern class to include an additional diesel engine to allow operations in the North Atlantic in addition to the North Sea. Built by AG Vulcan Hamburg launched 20 June 1917, the ship was about a year away from completion when construction was halted, and ultimately the incomplete vessel was scrapped in 1921.
