Smarter Fox

Smarter Fox (previously called Smarter Wikipedia) is a free, open source Firefox extension which aims to make Wikipedia more convenient to use from The Browser. It adds a "related articles" box to the left side of Wikipedia and integrates Wikipedia's search features into Firefox. It is aimed at Wikipedia power users. As of March 11, 2009 Smarter Fox has been downloaded over 58,000 times.

Features

  • Adds "related articles" box to the left side of Wikipedia.
  • Adds "Search Wikipedia for ..." option to context menu when text is selected.

Criticisms

  • Various users have criticized the lack of support for other languages besides the English Wikipedia.

Technical details

The extension adds a context menu using XUL. The "related articles" feature is implemented using an AJAX request to a web API. Because the request is sent only after the page finishes loading there is often a delay until result appear.
