Description
A design charrette was held October 2015 and the public voted on a plan with open green space and access to the river. The park will provide a publicly accessible boat launch for kayaking and canoeing on the Kinnickinnic River in Milwaukee's inner harbor. A Seiche Garden water fountain and decorative art wall will add to the aesthetics and a playground made out of re-purposed shipping containers will be available for children to play.
Natural History
Before the City of Milwaukee was created the area was a vast marshland with abundant stores of wild rice . Black ash, Cedar and Tamarack swamps were found throughout. Commerce through the waterways evolved the land into an industrial hub. The location is in proximity to the former Milwaukee Solvay Coke and Gas Company and was used for industrial purposes, such as coal storage and coke production until 1983.
