Shutter is a rich screenshot and editing program which is available for Linux. It is a Launchpad project written in Perl which uses the GTK+ widget toolkit and is distributed under a GNU GPL license. Shutter is an open-source program and is available completely for free. It is created by the developer Mario Kemper.

Features

Image capture

Shutter is primarily an image-capture tool. Shutter allows you to capture nearly anything on your screen without losing control over your screenshots, utilizing a tabbed interface. It provides diverse image-capturing functionality to capture common targets, including:

  • an arbitrary region of the screen
  • a desktop – including support for multi-monitor settings
  • an arbitrary window
  • a menu or tooltip
  • a website – using gnome-web-photo to capture an image without opening a browser window

Image editing

Shutter features a very basic built-in editor, with capabilities that include:

  • adding primitive elements, such as text, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, etc.
  • censoring / pixelizing portions of the image, e.g. to hide private data
  • adding an "auto-increment" shape, for marking incremental numbers onto a sequence of screenshots
  • cropping
