Shinkows
Shinkows is a historic Chinese restaurant in Ooty, India.
History
Established in 1954, it began as a shoe shop run by Chinese immigrant Liao Shinkows, who came to Ooty from Guangdong via Kolkata in early 1900s. After his father's death in 1964, his son, Liao Pao Chun, took over the business. The business evolved from broader services, from basic breakfast and tea to a focus on Chinese cuisine by the mid-1970s. It is famous for its Chilli chicken often referenced by menu number #13A, American/Chinese chopsuey, fried rice and noodle variations, sweet and sour pork, and Chilli beef or pork.
As of July 2026, it remains a family-run establishment, with Powks and his wife, Linda, continuing to operate it daily. The restaurant is known for its authentic Hakka-style Chinese cuisine, prepared using local ingredients and house-made sauces.
Reception
The restaurant has long been a popular dining spot for boarding school students from Ooty and the surrounding areas.
