By 1987, he established Keon-A Mechatronics that has evolved into the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) systems leader of today, Keon-A Information Technology Co. Ltd. In the first couple of years of its activity, Keon-A, had invested a massive effort in research resulting in the development of its first ITS product in 1990 which was a Vehicle License Plate Recognition System. Shim gained the support Korean government and The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (“ETRI”) which in turn formed a joint effort with Keon-A to invent Licence Plate Recognition (“LPR”). From this effort, Keon-A was granted the rights to commercialise Automatic Number Plate Recognition (“ANPR”) which applied LPR and delivered its initial product to the Korean National Police Agency. Shim has continued to lead Keon-A to innovate and maintain a leadership role in the ITS industry with 2009 revenues of US$25million, up 20%. Shim is currently leading Keon-A to explore new markets and applications for ANPR and ITS solutions thereby reinforcing its international status and recognition
