Shankar Sarda

Shankar Sarda (born September 4, 1937) is a well known critic, journalist, editor and author in Marathi Literature. He has authored over 60 books in Marathi. He has critiqued and reviewed around 2500 books in various newspapers since 1960. He was awarded Nieman Fellowship in 1964 at Harvard University . He was editor of various Marathi newspapers like Maharashtra Times Sunday EDition, Daily Lokmitra, Dainik AIKYA, Dainik Deshdoot, Lokmat.

Birth and Childhood

Shankar Sarda was born on 4 September 1937in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra. Even though his family was from business background, Shankar Sarda was inclined to literature from his early childhood. He was an avid reader and read almost all the books in the Mahabaleshwar public library. At the age of 13 his first book Chatur Champa (a collection of stories for children) was published. In next few years he wrote numerous books and got recognition as a children's author from many renowned editors like B. R. Bhagwat, (Balmitra monthly) Sane Guruji, (Weekly Sadhana).Gopinath Talwalkar, (Anand Monthly) Vasudeo Krishnaji Bhave (Suman Magazine). B.R. Modak(Mulanche Masik,Nagpur).Sudhamavashi (Loksatta Children's section),Virendra Adhia (Kumar). He attended a Literary Conference 'Kumar Sahitya Sammelan' held at Dahanu in 1949 and then at Ahmedabad in 1950 where he was felicitated as a young writer.

Primary Education - School No.1, Mahabaleshwar. Passed Vernacular Final Exam in 1951.
SSC (1955) - New English School, Pune.Stood 1st In Ardhamagadhi in the SSC Board.
B.A.(Hons) (1959) in Marathi. Stood first in the University, Awarded Delhi Maharashtriya Gold Medal. Sir Parashurambhau College, Pune, Pune University.
M.A. (1961) in Entire English. Mumbai University, Mumbai
Associate Nieman Fellow (1965) Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass, USA.

Visited Italy, Switzerland, West Berlin, Great Britain, France, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada etc. Travelled extensively in India,
