Screed Toe-taker

Screed Toe Taker is a fictional character in The Edge Chronicles series, and was originally known as Screedius Tollinix. He first appears in the second book as an antagonist. He was originally a knight academic, however, and how the transition from this to the murderous Screed Toe Taker occurred is uncertain, though guesses can be made- he evidently crash landed in the Mire and was driven mad somehow, though was unable to forget his mission of collecting stormphrax.

Screedius Tollinix, later known as the monstrous Screed Toe-taker, is a knight academic who is dedicated to serving the great floating city of Sanctaphrax. He is very passionate and knowledgable in the laws and rituals of the sky-scholars and confronts Quint when he overhears him calling his prowlgrin by name, an honour which can only belong to prowlgrins owned by knights academic who are soon to start their stormchasing voyages. Whilst at the knights academy, Screedius is taught by the ageing Hall Master of White Cloud Philius Embertine and when the gate keepers of the Knights academy attempt to arrest Phillius for breaking Sanctaphrax laws, Screedius stands up for his mentor and confronts Hax Vostillix, Hall Master of High Cloud, but is forced to stand down when his chance to go stormchasing is threatened.

He finally takes up his stormchasing quest aboard his skyship The Windcutter when Hax Vostillix declares that a great storm is imminent and he sets off for the Twilight Woods in search of the mysterious substance stormphrax. It is unknown what happens to Screedius en route to the Twilight Woods but it is clear that he crash lands in the Mire where he takes on the guise of Screed Toe-taker and slyly offers to guide unwary Deepwood creatures safely across the Mire. However, still unable to forget his quest, Screed murders the creatures he guides and removes their toes in order to collect the tiny specks of Stormphrax that has collected under their nails as they pass through the Twilight Woods. Screed carries on murdering poor victims in an effort to complete his quest until he offers to guide Twig and his remaining crew across the Mire. Screed takes the toes of Hubble the Banderbear, who dies from internal wounds, and then murders Spiker the Oakelf before attempting to [...] The Stone Pilot. However Twig arrives in time to stop Screed [...] The Stone Pilot and kills him when he becomes distracted by the Professor of Light shouting out his name from when he was a knight academic.
