Saturation acres

The recording studio

Saturation Acres is a professional recording studio located in Danville, PA, opened in 1999 by Bret Alexander and Paul Smith.

History

Smith and Alexander, both having backgrounds in sound engineering and production, met in the late 1980s while working at Susquehanna Sound Studio in Northumberland, PA. Eventually they would form The Badlees (with Alexander on lead guitar and Smith on bass) along with Pete Palladino, Jeff Feltenberger and Ron Simasek. The group rose to international prominence by the mid-1990s, touring the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong and China and signed on with a variety of record labels, including Polydor/Universal and Ark 21. After several years in legal label limbo, Smith and Alexander found themselves tempted to come "full circle" to their roots in music production. In 1999, they launched the Danville-area recording studio, Saturation Acres.

Studio

The studio building was built in the 1970s and prides itself With It's vintage "feel" and old school techniques. The walls are adorned with vinatge INSTRUMENTS and the control room includes a classic Showco board built for Pink Floyd during their touring years.

Saturation Acres features extensive 32-track recording, multimedia production, editing, mixing, and mastering facilities.

Artists

Smith and Alexander say they've never had a shortage of artists eager to record at their studio, in part because they became so hardwired into the Pennsylvania music scene as members of The Badlees.

They also offer their own in-house studio band, The Cellarbirds, which includes Smith, Alexander, and fellow Badlees member Ron Simasek. The band frequently provides back up instrumentals for solo artist singer-songwriters such as K8, John Blair, Joe Charles , Jared Campbell, Mark Helbock, and Jessica Weiser. Simasek and Alexander also provided session work for Ric Albano's progressive rock project Imaginary Lines. In 2001, the Cellarbirds released their own debut album Perfect Smile.

Several full bands have also recorded at Saturation Acres, including national acts such as Breaking Benjamin, who recorded their debut EP at the studio in 2002.
