Sara Andreasson

Sara Andreasson (born in Kristinehamn, Sweden on August 13, 1989) is an Swedish artist, illustrator and designer.

Education and present life

In 2008, Andreasson began her secondary education at Chalmers University of Technology and trained to be a design engineer. She worked toward a bachelor’s degree in product design engineering and in 2011, upon realizing that she “needed to work with something creative”, Andreasson began studying fine arts in design at the HDK. Andreasson presently continues her studies at HDK and subsequently works out of Gothenburg.

Artistry

Andreasson’s illustrative work takes root from classical Greek works with contemporary art mixed together: Adonis, Museum,Men you’ll almost certainly sleep with on your gap year, as well as several of her untitled pieces. She works predominantly in a flat, graphic style and has been published in several magazines, including The New York Times Magazine and Rolling Stone magazine.

Exhibitions

O.A.S is a collaborative work by Andreasson and fellow student Johanna Berg. It was designed to function publicly, independent of a designated viewing space (e.g. exhibitions, lectures and workshops.) O.A.S is an abbreviated form of the Swedish word for ‘oasis,’ which serves as a metaphor for some unexpected element. By placing the interactive objects in existing public spaces, Andreasson and Berg opened the floor for unexpected cultural exchange, allowing for the possibility of new creative venues.

Deciphering Dinner 3:33 is another collaboration with Johanna Berg, in which the two artists examine the effect sentimentality has on the value and function of objects. Andreasson and Berg fragment and decipher the remains of a dinner party that they had staged and filmed. After the dinner, they re-contextualized the various dining objects and trash according to a narrative created by examining the film footage, attaching each thing to a person or moment. The resulting furniture set was displayed along with a projection of the film footage at the Atelje Under Uppbyggnad (Atelier Under Construction), a studio compound in Gothenburg Sweden. After three hours and thirty-three minutes(the length of the dinner party), the piece was removed.

Cloud Cuckoo Land is Andreasson’s most recent collaboration with Johanna Berg. Andreasson, Berg and other students from their Spring 2014 Design as Value course at the HDK school of Design and Craft in Gothenburg were challenged to reflect on design’s ability to create value, placing emphasis on the practical work of materials and construction. The students in the class produced eleven playful pieces which were displayed in the Reflections exhibition at the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair, a part of Stockholm Design Week. Cloud Cuckoo Land is a recontextualized cabinet, which explores the contraposition of domestic exhibitionism and the industrial workspace. The piece was subsequently photographed by Design Milk and published to their various social media platforms.
